MONOGATARI Series: OFF & MONSTER Season

The Monogatari series is one of the longest-running anime projects of the last twenty years. It is based on light novels by Nisio Isin, and Studio Shaft has been animating them since Bakemonogatari in 2009. Off & Monster Season is the newest part. Aniplex and Shaft announced it in January 2024, and it premiered on July 6, 2024, with 14 episodes. Akiyuki Shinbo returned as chief director, with Midori Yoshizawa as director. Internationally, it streamed on Crunchyroll.

For most of the series, the hero was Koyomi Araragi, a high school boy who once became partly a vampire. Through many arcs, he helped girls around him who were touched by kaii, the strange spirits and curses of Japanese folklore. The Final Season wrapped up his high school years. This new season changes the focus. It adapts two groups of later novels, called Off Season and Monster Season, and most of its arcs are told from the side of the girls and other characters, not Koyomi.

The season is split into short arcs. Orokamonogatari follows Koyomi's little sister Tsukihi, watched over by Yotsugi Ononoki, a living doll who acts like a quiet, deadpan girl and is staying in the Araragi house pretending to be a toy. Nademonogatari follows Nadeko Sengoku. Once a shy girl who was caught in a dangerous god story, Nadeko is now a shut-in who wants to become a manga artist. Yotsugi starts visiting her, and Nadeko must face her own past and her dream. Wazamonogatari is a dark fairy tale about Acerola, a young woman who goes to a kingdom troubled by a vampire, and it ties into the history of the vampire known as Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master. Finally, Shinobumonogatari opens the Monster Season. Koyomi is now a university student. When three high school girls are attacked and drained by what seems to be a vampire, the expert Izuko Gaen asks him to look into it, and his partner Shinobu Oshino, the small blond vampire who lives in his shadow, is at the center of it.

Like earlier seasons, the show is full of long, clever talks, word games, and jokes about the series itself. Shaft's bold style is also back: sharp camera angles, flashing text cards, odd color choices, and empty city streets that feel like a stage. The story often jumps in time, so some arcs happen before others. It mixes mystery, urban fantasy, and coming-of-age drama, and many arcs are about girls deciding who they want to be after the boy who saved them has moved on.

This is not a starting point for new viewers. It works best for fans who have seen the earlier seasons and know the cast. For them, it is a chance to see the side characters grow, and to see what Koyomi and Shinobu face once school is over. A further Wazamonogatari episode has also been announced to continue the story.
