Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie -Rebellion-

Rebellion is a feature film from 2013. It continues the story of the TV series Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It came out in Japanese theaters on October 26, 2013. The animation studio Shaft made it. Akiyuki Shinbo was the chief director, and Yukihiro Miyamoto and Hiroyuki Terao also directed. Gen Urobuchi wrote the story, just like he did for the TV show. Yuki Kajiura wrote the music. If you have not seen the TV series, you should watch it first. This movie picks up after its ending and expects you to know what happened.

The film opens in Mitakihara, the same city from the show. At first, things look bright and happy. Five magical girls live there and work together as a team. A magical girl is a young girl who gains special powers and fights evil in a magic outfit. The team is Madoka Kaname, Homura Akemi, Sayaka Miki, Mami Tomoe, and Kyoko Sakura. They go to school, share cake and tea, and laugh together. At night, they fight strange monsters called Nightmares. These fights are colorful and almost playful, like a dance.

Fans of the TV series will feel that something is off right away. In the show, several of these girls had sad or terrible fates. Now they are all together and smiling, as if nothing bad ever happened. Homura is the first character to notice this. Little by little, she sees that the memories of the people around her do not fit. Details in the town do not add up. She starts to believe that the whole peaceful world is not real. She suspects that the group is trapped inside a witch's labyrinth. In this series, a labyrinth is a strange, dream-like space that a witch creates to hold its victims. Homura sets out to learn who made this false world and why.

Madoka is kind and gentle. Sayaka is bold and emotional. Mami is calm and acts like an older sister to the group. Kyoko is tough, but she has a soft side. Kyubey, the small white creature who makes contracts with girls in exchange for a wish, is also part of the story. As in the TV show, the film asks big questions. What is hope, and what does it cost? What does it mean to love someone? Is it right to change the world for one person? The story is best enjoyed with no hints about where it goes. Its later scenes are famous for surprising many viewers.

The movie is known for its bold visual style. Shaft mixes normal anime drawings with paper-cut shapes, strange collage art, and dream-like sets. The witch worlds look like moving art pieces. Kajiura's music moves between sweet, bright songs and dark, dramatic choir music. The film changes mood many times, from cute school comedy to horror and tragedy.

Critics praised the film for its creative storytelling and its growth of the characters. One review called it gorgeous and mind-bendingly creative. It won the Best Theatrical Film Award at the 19th Animation Kobe Awards. It also won a Notable Entry Award at the 13th Tokyo Anime Award Festival. It was nominated for Animation of the Year at the 37th Japan Academy Prize. For fans of the series, it is an important and much-talked-about chapter of the story.
