Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO

SEED FREEDOM ZERO is a new chapter in the Gundam SEED story that has been waiting a very long time to be told. Sunrise and Bandai Namco Filmworks announced it in November 2024, during special screenings of the hit 2024 movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Director Mitsuo Fukuda has said that its script was written about twenty years ago. About half of the storyboards (the drawn plans for each shot) had been finished. The story is based on a plan by writers Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita that was made while SEED FREEDOM was being planned. It was first meant to be a direct-to-video release, called an OVA. In May 2026, at the Gundam Conference Spring 2026 stream, the team said it will be shown in Japanese theaters.

Gundam SEED takes place in the Cosmic Era, a future where people are split into two groups. Naturals are ordinary humans. Coordinators have genes that were changed before birth. The two sides fought two terrible wars with giant robot suits, called mobile suits. ZAFT is the army of the PLANTs, the space colonies where many Coordinators live.

ZERO happens before SEED FREEDOM, in the year C.E. 74. The second big war has just ended. A plan to assign every person a role based on their genes, known as the Destiny Plan, has failed. Cagalli Yula Athha, the leader of the nation of Orb, wants to build a calmer world. She works to create a new worldwide group to watch over the peace. This group, called Compass, later becomes the center of SEED FREEDOM.

The main character is Shinn Asuka. Shinn was the hot-headed young ZAFT pilot at the center of SEED Destiny. Now that the fighting is over, he is not sure where his life should go. Lunamaria Hawke, his fellow pilot and close partner, is also a main character. A famous machine, a mobile suit that came through many old battles, is sent from ZAFT to Compass's short-term base on Onogoro Island in Orb. It is the Strike Freedom Gundam, the suit usually flown by Kira Yamato. On the very first night, someone steals it.

Nobody knows who took it or why. Shinn and the people around him must find the suit before the trouble grows into something worse. The story looks set to show how Shinn grows from a soldier who lost his way into one of the Compass members fans meet in SEED FREEDOM. It should mix mecha action with drama and the political tension the SEED series is known for.

As of 2026, the release date, cast, and full staff have not been confirmed. Fans of SEED Destiny who wanted more time with Shinn and Lunamaria have reason to watch for news. It is best enjoyed after seeing the earlier SEED shows.
