Kira, Athrun and Shinn are heading back to cinemas on January 15, 2027. That is the Japanese opening date the official Gundam SEED X account has set for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, and Bandai Namco Filmworks followed it at New York Comic Con by booking North American theaters for February 2027. The GUNDAM Showcase 2026 panel at the convention also premiered a new teaser trailer and teaser visual.

The film opens just after the end of the great war, when someone steals the Strike Freedom on Onogoro Island, and it follows Shinn Asuka and the people around him through what comes next. It is a prequel to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which opened in Japan on January 26, 2024 and, according to AnimeTV, went on to out-earn every earlier Gundam film at the Japanese box office.

This project has been a long time coming in more than one sense. ZERO was first revealed with a teaser in November 2024, and Anime.com notes that the staff originally conceived the material as an OVA roughly two decades ago. AnimeTV adds that its story was written while SEED FREEDOM was in production.

The returning team

Mitsuo Fukuda, who has directed the SEED franchise, is back in the chair. The script is his as well, shared with longtime collaborators Chiaki Morosawa and Shigeru Morita. On the visual side, Hisashi Hirai again doubles as character designer and chief animation director, while the score comes from Toshihiko Sahashi. SUNRISE is responsible for planning and production, and the theatrical release in Japan is being handled jointly by Shochiku and Bandai Namco Filmworks.

For the English release, Matthew Erickson voices Shinn, Matt Hill plays Kira Yamato and Sam Vincent returns to Athrun Zala.

Before the premiere

Japanese fans get an earlier look at the cast: the director will share a GUNDAM-Con 2027 stage with Tomokazu Seki, Daisuke Ono and Kenichi Suzumura, and the event's second ticket lottery is now open. Specific North American dates and participating theaters have not been announced yet.
