About
Fans waited almost twenty years for this film. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM opened in Japanese theaters on January 26, 2024. It was made by Sunrise and directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, who also directed the original Gundam SEED TV series in 2002 and its sequel, Gundam SEED Destiny. The movie runs about two hours. It was part of a project called Gundam SEED Project Ignited, which celebrated the series' 20th anniversary. The film became a huge hit. It earned about 5 billion yen in Japan in its first run and became the highest-earning Gundam movie ever.
The SEED stories take place in a future time called the Cosmic Era. Humanity is split into two groups. Naturals are ordinary people. Coordinators are people whose genes were changed before birth to make them smarter and stronger. Many Coordinators live in huge space colonies called the PLANTs. For years the two sides have fought terrible wars using giant robot suits, which the series calls mobile suits. A hate group named Blue Cosmos wants to wipe out all Coordinators.
The movie is set in the year C.E. 75, a short time after the war at the end of SEED Destiny. Peace is still weak. Blue Cosmos keeps attacking, and new countries on Earth are pushing for independence. To keep order, a new peacekeeping group called Compass is formed. Lacus Clyne, a former leader of the PLANTs, helps lead it. Kira Yamato, the gentle hero and star pilot of the first series, is Compass's top commander in the field. Shinn Asuka and Lunamaria Hawke, the young pilots from SEED Destiny, now fight beside him instead of against him.
Then a rising nation in Eurasia called Foundation reaches out to Compass. Its leaders, Orphee Lam Tao and Aura Maha Khyber, suggest a shared attack on the main Blue Cosmos base. Kira and his friends join the plan, but it pulls them into a much larger and more dangerous conflict that puts both Earth and the PLANTs at risk. Old heroes Athrun Zala and Cagalli Yula Athha also return, working on the political and military side of the crisis.
The film is about more than robot battles. At its heart is the bond between Kira and Lacus. Both of them are tired after years of war, and both carry heavy duties. The story asks what it means to fight for peace, and whether people should be free to choose their own path. There is plenty of action, with big space battles and new Gundam designs, and a lot of music from the series' long history.
Critics were mostly positive. They praised the Kira and Lacus romance, the animation, the music, and the large battles, though some disliked the amount of fan service. The movie won Newtype Anime Awards for best film and best mechanical design. It works best for viewers who have seen the earlier SEED shows. A prequel called SEED FREEDOM ZERO was announced later in 2024.
