About
Gintama: The Final Chapter - Be Forever Yorozuya is the second Gintama movie. It opened in Japanese theaters on July 6, 2013. Unlike the first film, which retold a story from the manga, this one is a new story. Its script was written by Hideaki Sorachi, the creator of the Gintama manga himself. Yoichi Fujita, the director of the TV anime, also directed the film. The title calls it the final chapter, and the movie was promoted as an ending, though the TV series later went on for several more seasons. That kind of joke fits the series very well.
Gintama takes place in a wacky version of Edo, the old name for Tokyo. In this world, aliens called Amanto took over Japan. Samurai can no longer carry swords, and the city mixes old Japanese life with spaceships and modern gadgets. The hero is Gintoki Sakata, a lazy former samurai with silver hair and a sweet tooth. He runs the Yorozuya, a business that does odd jobs for money, with his two young partners: Shinpachi Shimura, a sensible boy who wears glasses, and Kagura, a strong alien girl who eats a lot.
The film opens with a silly scene at a movie theater. Gintoki catches someone who seems to be secretly filming a new movie. But the camera turns out to be something far stranger: a robot that can travel through time. Suddenly, Gintoki finds himself five years in the future. The Edo he knew is gone. The city is now a sad, broken place, hit hard by a disease called the White Plague, which has killed many people.
Things get worse when he learns what happened to his friends. In this future, Gintoki himself went missing years ago and left only a strange note behind. Without him, the Yorozuya fell apart. Shinpachi and Kagura stopped working together and now fight alone, older and much tougher than before. Wearing a disguise so no one knows who he is, Gintoki tries to bring the team back together and find out where the White Plague came from. The answer is tied to the darkest parts of his own past.
The movie has everything fans love about Gintama. There are lots of jokes, including parody scenes and gags about movies and the anime itself. There are also great sword fights and a story about friendship and the bonds of found family, the people we choose to treat as family. Many characters from the TV series appear, often in new and older forms, which is a fun treat for fans.
It is best to watch some of the TV series first, so you know the main cast and their history. Once you do, this film is a strong mix of laughter, action, and real emotion, and many fans count it as one of the best things in the whole franchise.
