About
Minami-ke is a gentle comedy about daily life. It started as a manga by Koharu Sakuraba, which has run in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since March 2004. It is a seinen magazine, which means it is made mainly for adult men, yet the story itself is light and sweet. The manga has passed 29 volumes. The first anime came out in 2007 from the studio Daume, with 13 episodes. More seasons and short OVA episodes followed over the next several years, made by the studios Asread and Feel.
The show is a slice of life. That means there is no big war, no secret powers and no grand quest. The fun comes from small moments at home and at school, such as cooking a meal, oversleeping, a school test, or a silly argument. If you like calm shows that make you laugh, this is a good fit. It is also known as a classic of the cute girls doing cute things style, where a group of girls fill the screen with charm.
The story is about three sisters who live together. Haruka is the oldest. She is kind, responsible and very good at housework, and she takes care of the others. When she is alone, though, she can become lazy. Kana is the middle sister. She is loud, she acts without thinking, she is a poor cook, and she often sleeps too late. Chiaki is the youngest and the sharpest. She is in school, she says what she thinks in a cool voice, and she looks up to Haruka. The sisters have no parents at home, so they depend on each other for almost everything, from small chores to nervous moments about love.
Around the sisters is a group of friends and classmates. One of the best known is Toma, a girl who dresses and acts like a boy. Chiaki treats Toma like a little brother, even though they are not related. Many jokes come from how these characters clash. Kana keeps making a mess, Chiaki keeps scolding her, and Haruka tries to keep the peace.
The seasons have slightly different feels. The second season, Okawari, added original stories that were not in the manga. The third season, Okaeri, went back closer to the style of the first. The later season Tadaima came out in 2013. Together, the series gives viewers a lot of calm, funny episodes to enjoy.
Minami-ke does not try to shock anyone. Its charm is in warm family feeling and well timed jokes. It is easy to watch, with short, self-contained stories, so you can start almost anywhere.
