HELL MODE: The Hardcore Gamer Dominates in Another World with Garbage Balancing

Hell Mode started as a web novel by the writer Hamuo. It first appeared on the site Shosetsuka ni Naro in November 2019. It won the grand prize of the 2nd Earth Star Novel Award in 2020. After that, Earth Star Entertainment began printing it as a light novel, with art by Mo, in July 2020. There were fourteen volumes by January 2026. By December 2024 the books had sold more than 1.6 million copies. Enji Tetta draws the manga version. In English, J-Novel Club sells the novels digitally and Yen Press prints them. The anime is made by Yokohama Animation Laboratory and directed by Masato Tamagawa. Its first season aired 12 episodes from January to March 2026. In North America it streams on HIDIVE, licensed by Sentai Filmworks.

The hero begins as Kenichi Yamada, a 35-year-old office worker in Japan. He loves long, hard online role-playing games. He likes games that take hundreds of hours and reward careful planning. Modern games feel too easy to him, and that bores him. One day he finds a strange game with a difficulty setting called Hell Mode. The game promises that growth is very slow, but that there is no limit to how strong you can become. Kenichi picks it without a second thought. He chooses the Summoner class, a class that calls magical creatures to fight and help. Then he is pulled into the game's world for real.

He is reborn there as a baby named Allen. His new family are serfs. Serfs are poor farm workers who belong to the land and its lord, and they are not free to leave. The world is like a medieval fantasy kingdom, with nobles, knights, and monsters. Allen still has all of his memories from Japan, including his gamer brain. From a very young age, he studies how his powers work, tests every rule, and trains in secret.

That is what makes this show different. Many isekai stories, where someone is reborn in another world, give the hero a huge power at the start. Allen gets the opposite. Hell Mode means he must work much harder than anyone else to level up. At first, his Summoner skill looks weak and strange to the people around him. But Allen is patient. He treats life like a long game, making plans, collecting resources, and grinding, which means repeating tasks again and again to grow stronger.

Allen also has goals beyond power. He wants to help his family escape their hard life as serfs. As a child he makes an important friend, Krena, a girl from his village who has great talent with the sword. Their friendship and her growth are important parts of the story. Allen uses his creatures in clever ways, not only to fight, but also to scout, carry things, and solve problems.

The mood is upbeat and focused on growth. Fans of games will enjoy seeing Allen think like a player, testing skills and finding tricks. The show has battles with monsters, creature taming, and a satisfying sense of slow progress. It is also a warm story about a man who finally gets a family he wants to protect.
