About
This is the second half of Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court. Its Japanese title is Futsutsuka na Akujo de wa Gozaimasu ga. The anime comes from Doga Kobo, with Mitsue Yamazaki as director. The first half aired on TV Tokyo and AT-X from July to September 2026. This second half is planned for January 2027. The show streams on Crunchyroll, and also on Hulu in the US, Disney+ in some regions, and Netflix in parts of Asia.
The story began as a web novel by Satsuki Nakamura. It was first posted online in 2020 and then printed as light novels, with art by Kana Yuki. (A light novel is a short Japanese novel for young readers, with anime-style pictures.) There is also a manga version drawn by Ei Ohitsuji. Seven Seas publishes both in English. The series has about 3 million copies in print and won a light novel grand prize at a 2023 e-comic awards event in Japan.
The setting is a royal court inspired by old China. Five noble clans each send a daughter to a closed palace. There the young women, called maidens, are trained so that one of them may one day become queen. Kou Reirin is the most loved maiden of all, but she has always been sick and weak. Shu Keigetsu is the most hated. People mock her and call her the "Court Rat." In the first half, Keigetsu used forbidden magic to switch bodies with Reirin. Keigetsu hoped to steal a better life. Instead, Reirin happily enjoyed having a healthy body for once, while Keigetsu found out that the life she envied was not easy at all.
When this part begins, the trouble from that curse is over. The two girls have come to understand each other, and a real friendship is starting to form. Months pass, and autumn arrives. Each year the Crown Prince and the maidens hold a Harvest Festival, a ceremony to pray for a good crop. This year it will take place in the south, in the lands of Keigetsu's Shu clan. That makes Keigetsu the host. She has no older consort to guide her, so she feels a lot of pressure. Reirin cheers her on and is also excited, because this is her first trip outside the palace.
Things go wrong soon after they arrive. An accident stops the ceremony. In the panic, Keigetsu loses control of her magic, and the two girls switch bodies again. Then Reirin, now in Keigetsu's body, is kidnapped. Reirin's two protective older brothers, Kou Keikou and Kou Keishou, step in to help. Someone new seems to be working in the shadows to make Keigetsu look guilty. Other key figures include Ei Gyoumei, the Crown Prince and Reirin's cousin, and Shin-u, his younger half-brother, who leads a guard unit called the Eagle Eyes.
The charm of the series is its two very different heroines. Reirin is gentle, smart, and surprisingly tough. Keigetsu is proud and sharp but lonely inside. The show mixes palace drama, mystery, a little romance, and a lot of comedy. This second half gives them a new mystery to solve outside the palace walls.
