About
Food Wars! is a cooking anime that treats making dinner like a sports battle. It is based on the manga Shokugeki no Soma, written by Yuto Tsukuda and drawn by Shun Saeki. The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2019. A real chef, Yuki Morisaki, helped create the recipes, so many of the dishes in the story can actually be cooked at home. This first anime season was made by the studio J.C.Staff and directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani. It began airing in April 2015 and ran for 24 episodes.
The hero is Soma Yukihira, a teenage boy who grew up helping in his father's small restaurant in a normal shopping street. Soma is cheerful, sure of himself, and loves to try strange new ideas in the kitchen. His big dream is to finally win a cooking contest against his father, Joichiro, and one day run the restaurant himself. Then his father surprises him. He closes the shop so he can travel and work abroad, and he sends Soma to a famous school for cooks.
That school is Totsuki Culinary Academy. It is one of the hardest schools in the country to get into, and even harder to finish. Many famous chefs studied there, and most students come from rich families or well-known restaurants. Soma, who learned to cook in a simple local eatery, does not fit in at all. Still, he does not feel small. He sees the school as a place full of strong rivals, and that only makes him want to cook harder.
The school has a special rule. When students disagree, they can settle it with a shokugeki. This is a formal cooking duel. Two cooks make dishes, judges taste them, and the winner gets what was promised before the match. A shokugeki can decide almost anything, from small arguments to whether a student can stay at the school. These duels give the show its tense, exciting energy.
One of the most important students is Erina Nakiri, the granddaughter of the school's head. She has an amazing sense of taste, and her opinion can make or break a cook's future. From the very start, she does not want Soma at Totsuki. Soma moves into the Polaris Dormitory, an old student home filled with odd but friendly people. There he meets Megumi Tadokoro, a shy and kind girl who is a gifted cook but gets very nervous under pressure. Many more rivals and friends join over time.
The show is famous for how it shows food. When a character tastes a great dish, the scene turns wild and over the top, as if the flavor has the power to change the world for a moment. These reactions are often sexy and silly, and some reviewers felt the fan service, meaning scenes made to excite viewers, got in the way. Others praised the real recipes, the fun art, and Soma as a likable hero. The manga has sold more than 20 million copies, and the anime went on for five seasons. If you like cooking, friendly rivalry, or underdog stories, this is a tasty place to start.
