Chainsmoker Cat is a silly adult comedy anime from Summer 2026. It adapts a manga by NyanNyanFactory, a shared pen name used by a team of three artists. The manga has run in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine since February 2023 and had 13 volumes by August 2026. It did well in fan rankings, placing 12th in the 2023 Next Manga Award and 18th in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2024 guide. The anime was made by Bibury Animation Studios. Taku Kimura directed it, and Takashi Aoshima was in charge of the series composition, which means planning how the story is split across the episodes. It aired on Japanese TV from July 3 to September 25, 2026. Netflix released it around the world, starting one day before the TV premiere. The broadcasts on Tokyo MX and BS11 were censored, while the AT-X version was uncut. The story is set in a world where people who are part animal live side by side with regular humans. The hero is Yaniko Sato, usually just called Yani. She is a cat girl, with cat ears and a tail, who lives in a small, run-down building. Yani is hooked on cigarettes. She lights one after another and has a very hard time staying away from them. Her room is a messy disaster, and she is often lazy and careless about money, work, and chores. When she tries to stop, the urge usually wins in no time. The show is a light, episode-by-episode comedy. Most stories show Yani getting into small, awkward, or embarrassing situations in her daily routine. A big part of the fun is the people around her. Her younger sister, Imoko, is the responsible one and often has to deal with Yani's mess. The owner of the building, Oya Otani, and a group of odd neighbors, including Yakuko, Hameko, Kaoruko, and Aruko, all add their own strange habits and jokes. The humor is rude and aimed at adults. It includes crude jokes and some sexual content, which is why the TV version needed cuts. Under the jokes, there is a small, sweet side. Yani is a mess, but the people in her life keep looking out for her, and the show often finds warmth in that. The series also caused some debate because of its topic. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, it was taken off some streaming platforms over worries that it promoted tobacco. Even so, it was one of the most-watched new shows of its season, with tens of thousands of AniList users tracking it.
