Akio is loud and silly, and Sanae is warm and gentle, and her homemade bread is famous for being terrible. They treat Tomoya like a son. Their happy home shows Tomoya what a family can be, and it stands in sharp contrast to the cold house he grew up in. The second half of the season is where the series becomes known for its sadness. Real life brings serious trouble, and the story does not look away from it. It asks what a parent owes a child, and how people can forgive each other after years of pain. There is also a short, dreamlike side story about a lonely girl in an empty world made of scrap, which appears between scenes. Its meaning becomes clearer toward the end.
