Tsukuyo is the leader of the Hyakka, a group of female fighters who guard the underground city of Yoshiwara. The group takes orders from the city's ruler, Housen, who is called the Night King. At first Tsukuyo seems cold and hard. She does not trust outsiders, and she treats the Odd Jobs team as a threat when they first arrive.
Her childhood was lonely. She lost her family when she was young, and a skilled killer named Jiraia took her in and trained her. He wanted her to feel the same pain he had felt. Instead, she found real friends and a home. Hinowa, the most respected woman in Yoshiwara, helped raise her like an older sister or a mother. Tsukuyo stays loyal to Hinowa and to the city she calls home.
After she works with Gintoki Sakata, Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura, she becomes warmer and a bit more relaxed. She also gets drunk very easily. She slowly grows fond of Gintoki, but she is shy and does not want to admit it. When Jiraia comes back to Yoshiwara, Gintoki beats him, and Tsukuyo steps in to protect Gintoki from a final attack.

Gintama is one of the best-loved comedy series in Japan. It mixes silly jokes with sword fights, and every so often it turns serious and touching. This 2026 film is a new telling of one of its most famous stories, the Yoshiwara arc. The movie opened in Japanese theaters on February 13, 2026, and it was released on Netflix later that year, on August 27. It runs about two hours. Naoya Andou directed it, and Bandai Namco Pictures made the animation. It was announced as part of the 20th birthday project for the Gintama franchise. It gathers the story from two volumes of the manga, and the TV version of this story took eight episodes. The setting is an alternate Edo, an old Japanese city, that was invaded by aliens. Samurai are no longer very important, and they have lost the right to carry swords in public. The hero, Gintoki Sakata, is a lazy, sweet-loving swordsman who runs a small odd-jobs shop. His two helpers are Shinpachi Shimura, a polite young man who often plays the straight man in jokes, and Kagura, a strong and hungry girl from an alien race. Together they take any job that pays, big or small. In this story, the group meets a young pickpocket named Haruta. He steals not because he is greedy, but because he hopes to find his mother, Hinowa, who is said to be the top courtesan of Yoshiwara. A courtesan is a woman who entertains guests at a pleasure district. Yoshiwara is a hidden district, and it sits underground, away from the sun. Gintoki and his friends decide to help the boy meet her. The trouble is the ruler of that district, a powerful figure called Housen, known as the Night King. He holds the place and the women in it under a tight grip. To reach Haruta's mother, the heroes must face him. Along the way, they meet Tsukuyo, a tough protector of the district, and they also meet people who dream of seeing the sky. The tone is both funny and emotional. The comedy is quick and often makes fun of other anime and itself, but the main story is about family, freedom, and what it means to protect someone. Many fans consider this arc a high point of the whole series, so the movie is a chance to see it with new animation and big fight scenes on a theater screen. New viewers can follow the main story, but they will enjoy it more if they know the main trio. The film contains some violence and adult themes, so it is best for older teens and adults.
