Srajo, known by her title 'the Obscure,' belongs to the small, elite group of explorers who have earned the rank of White Whistle, the highest honor any Delver into the great pit called the Abyss can achieve. Reaching that rank all but guarantees she has pulled off remarkable discoveries and recovered powerful relics during her time below, even though the full story of her career is rarely discussed openly.
Like most who reach her level, Srajo chose to settle on the Abyss's fifth layer, the deepest point from which a diver can still realistically climb back out alive. Staying there rather than pushing further is the one choice that separates a cautious legend from a reckless one, and for years that is exactly the life Srajo seemed to lead.
Then, without warning or explanation to anyone around her, Srajo decides to attempt what divers call a Last Dive: a one-way descent past the point of safe return, straight into the sixth layer. She tells no one of her plan except Bondrewd, a fellow White Whistle whose own methods are far less scrupulous than most. Why she trusted him with that secret, and what she hoped to find on a dive she likely knew she would not survive, remains one of the quieter mysteries hanging over the deeper layers of the Abyss.
On screen

This entry is the next movie in a new film series that carries on the Made in Abyss story. The series is called Awakening Mystery in English. It was first announced in August 2025. Instead of making a third TV season, the creators chose to tell the next chapter on the big screen, one film at a time. The first film opened in Japanese theaters on October 23, 2026. Around the same time, news reports said a follow-up film was already being made. This page is for that follow-up. Made in Abyss comes from a manga by Akihito Tsukushi that began in 2012. It is set around a huge hole in the earth, called the Abyss. The hole is full of strange creatures and very old objects from lost peoples. Anyone who climbs back up out of the deep feels a terrible sickness, a curse that grows stronger the lower you go. A brave girl named Riko and a robot boy named Reg go down into this hole to look for Riko's lost mother. Later, they are joined by Nanachi, a gentle, rabbit-like creature who was once human. In the last TV season, they also met Faputa, a fierce and powerful girl. The first film picks up right where the 2022 TV season, The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, ended. News reports say the new story deals with the friends leaving the sixth layer and pushing on toward the seventh. This new movie should keep following that path. The full plot has not been shared yet, so we will not guess at what happens. Fans of the manga can expect the same mix of wonder, danger, and heavy feelings that the show is known for. The team behind the first film includes director Masayuki Kojima and writer Hideyuki Kurata, the same pair who led the TV seasons. The studio is Kinema Citrus, with character designs credited to Yuka Kuroda and Kazuchika Kise. In the first film, Miyu Tomita voices Riko, Mariya Ise voices Reg, Shiori Izawa voices Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno voices Faputa. Full staff and cast details for this newer film had not been confirmed at the time of writing. Like everything in this series, it is likely not a story for young children. The earlier seasons have very violent and sad scenes, even though the heroes are kids. Viewers who are new to the series should begin with the first TV season from 2017, then watch the movie Dawn of the Deep Soul, the 2022 season, and the first Awakening Mystery film before this one.
