Sayaka Mine never set out to go on any grand adventure. She wakes up one day tied together with a tiger named Kagetora, right as the wild swordsman Yaiba sets off on a quest for a legendary blade called the Thunder God's sword, and gets swept into his journey almost entirely by accident.
Once she is part of the group, Sayaka becomes its voice of reason, the calm, grounded presence who reacts to Yaiba's reckless antics with the exasperation of someone far more sensible than he is. She comes from the respected Mine family: her father, Raizo, runs his own kendo school, her mother Shizuka keeps the household steady, and her sharp-tongued grandmother, known to everyone as Goinkyo, rounds out a family that clearly shaped her no-nonsense attitude. A small sea cucumber she has nicknamed Mr. Sea Cucumber rides along on her shoulder as an odd, constant companion through all of it.
As the story unfolds, Sayaka's role turns out to be far bigger than anyone first assumes. She is revealed to be the living incarnation of the Dragon Maiden, a figure tied directly to the true, hidden form of the demon Kaguya. During the battle against the serpent Yamata no Orochi, a version of Sayaka possessed by Kaguya herself manages to block the monster's heart, playing a critical part in sealing it away. Her bond with Yaiba Kurogane grows from simple circumstance into real affection, even as her true nature pulls her into a destiny far stranger than the ordinary life she expected.

Shin Samurai-den YAIBA, known in English as Yaiba: Samurai Legend, is a new TV anime based on a classic manga by Gosho Aoyama. Aoyama is best known as the creator of Detective Conan, also called Case Closed. He drew YAIBA from 1988 to 1993 in Weekly Shonen Sunday. The manga first became an anime in 1993. This new version was made by Wit Studio and directed by Takahiro Hasui. It aired in Japan from April 5 to September 27, 2025, for 24 episodes. It ran right next to Detective Conan, in a TV block named after Aoyama. The hero is Yaiba Kurogane, a loud, fearless boy. He grew up deep in the forest with his father, Kenjuro, who taught him to fight with a sword. Yaiba lived like a wild child. He fought animals and knew very little about normal life. When he comes to Japan, he moves in with the Mine family and meets their daughter, Sayaka. She is smart, quick to anger, and often has to keep Yaiba out of trouble. Yaiba soon meets Takeshi Onimaru, a proud boy who is also very good with a sword. The two become rivals at once, and their first fight ends with no winner. Then Onimaru gets hold of a magic sword with dark power. It changes him into a demon lord who wants to rule the world with an army of demons. Yaiba must grow much stronger to stop him. To do that, he goes on a big journey with his friends. Along the way he meets heroes, gods, and monsters from Japanese history and old stories. The show is mostly a fun action comedy. Yaiba is silly and selfish at first, and much of the humor comes from how little he understands the world around him. But the fights are fast and exciting, and the story slowly becomes a tale about courage, friendship, and growing up. It also uses many ideas from Japanese folklore, such as youkai, which are spirits and monsters from old tales. Some characters can change shape or are animals who act like people. A nice detail for longtime fans is the cast. Minami Takayama, who voiced Yaiba in the 1993 anime, plays him again here. She is also the voice of Conan in Detective Conan. Yoshimasa Hosoya voices Onimaru. The opening song for the first half is "Blade" by Blue Encount. Outside Japan, the series streams on Netflix in many regions and on Hulu in the United States, and Viz Media holds the English license. A second season, which adapts the story arc about Kaguya, was announced in September 2025. It is set to start on January 9, 2027.
