On screen

This TV anime is based on a Japanese fantasy story by the writer Hifumi. It first appeared online, on the free novel website Shosetsuka ni Naro, in January 2015, and ran there until September 2019. Earth Star Entertainment then printed it as a light novel series (a light novel is a short Japanese novel with anime-style pictures), with art by Kurihito Muto. The books came out between 2015 and 2019 and ended at fourteen volumes. A manga version drawn by Fuh Araki began in 2017, and J-Novel Club publishes that manga in English. The anime was first announced in February 2026 and is planned to start in January 2027, as part of the winter season. The hero is Asley, and his story begins with a failure. As a young man, he wanted to study at a school of magic, but he did not pass the entrance test. Later, he made a strange potion of his own, called an Ancient Elixir, and drank it. The potion stopped his body from aging. He could no longer grow old or die from age. So Asley hid away from the world and spent thousands of years doing almost nothing but studying magic. Some sources say it was about five thousand years. By the end, he knew old and powerful kinds of magic that almost nobody alive still understands. Asley was not fully alone in that long quiet time. His partner is Pochi, a dog who is also his familiar. In fantasy stories, a familiar is a magic animal that lives with a wizard and helps them. Pochi is very old too, said to be around eight hundred years old, and very strong. This dog is not a shy pet. Pochi speaks freely, pushes Asley around, and is the one who finally tells him to leave his home and go out into the world again. That advice is not always gentle, and much of the humor comes from how these two tease and argue with each other. When Asley returns to normal life, he looks young, but he has been away for a very long time. The world has changed, and he does not really fit in. He wants to test what his magic can do, meet people, and build a better name for himself. The joke of the title is that he is called a fool, even though he is one of the strongest mages anywhere. He is smart about magic but often clumsy about people, and he still has a lot of growing up to do. Along the way he and Pochi stand out wherever they go, and they find bigger dangers waiting for them. Another character named Rina is also part of the cast. The show mixes comedy, fantasy, and a little romance with a supernatural feel. It belongs to a popular type of fantasy story in which a very powerful hero tries to live an ordinary life. Here, the fun is less about winning fights and more about an odd pair learning how to live among people again. It is a light and silly adventure, but it also asks a quiet question: what do you do with your life when you have all the time in the world? Studio Elle is making the anime, and Bushiroad Move announced the project. Keisuke Onishi is the director. Kurasumi Sunayama writes the series scripts, and Yumiko Mizuno designs the characters. Yuri Habuka is writing the music. Toshiyuki Toyonaga voices Asley, Yoko Hikasa voices Pochi, and Minori Fujidera voices Rina. Crunchyroll plans to stream the series outside Japan.
