Norman the Snowman is a small, gentle series of Japanese animated films about a friendly snowman and a child who loves him. The first film, The Northern Lights, came out in 2013 and runs about 26 minutes. In it, a boy slips out of his house on the night of the first snowfall in his northern town. He and his friend Norman ride a train north to see the natural wonders Norman always talked about. A second short, On a Night of Shooting Stars, followed a few years later. This time the boy and the snowman travel to a snowy land to watch stars fall across the sky. The earlier films were directed by Takeshi Yashiro, who also makes live-action TV commercials. They were made with stop-motion animation. In stop-motion, real models and puppets are moved a tiny bit and photographed one frame at a time, so they seem to move on their own. For the snowy fields, the team used salt instead of real snow. The films were also made to be shown in planetariums, the round theaters where stars are projected on a dome ceiling. Because of this, the pictures were planned to fill a curved screen above the audience. On a Night of Shooting Stars was chosen by the jury of the 21st Japan Media Arts Festival in its animation section. Kodomo-tachi no Hitotsuboshi is the newest film in the series. The Japanese subtitle means roughly "the children's single star." It is an original story, not based on a book or manga. Listings name Tecarat as the animation studio and Taiyo Kikaku as the producer, and they place the release in December 2026. At the time of writing, no exact opening day or list of theaters had been announced. The new story jumps forward in time. The boy from the earlier films is no longer a child. He is now a young adult who lives in a different place from his mother. When he comes back to the town where he grew up, he finds it hard to talk openly with her about how he feels. Then he meets Norman again, the snowman friend from his childhood. Soon after, a strange little child shows up. This child is looking for something called "snow flowers." Together, the young man, Norman, and the child set out into a forest deep in snow to help with the search. The film is listed as a fantasy and adventure story made for kids. Like the earlier shorts, it seems to focus on quiet wonder, winter nature, and the warm bond between a person and a magical friend. The new part is the grown-up hero. His problem is not a monster or a villain, but a family feeling that is hard to put into words. Fans who saw the first films as children may enjoy seeing the boy grow up, while new viewers can simply enjoy a calm, snowy journey with a kind snowman.
