Mikoto Yamato lost her parents only a few years after she was born, and a Far Eastern god named Takemikazuchi and his companion Tsukuyomi took her in at their small shrine's orphanage, raising her alongside other orphaned children who eventually formed the Takemikazuchi Familia together. As a child, she and her fellow orphans would sneak out at night to visit a lonely, sheltered girl named Haruhime Sanjouno, giving the isolated girl a rare taste of friendship, even after the two families' relationship soured once the visits were discovered.
Two years before the main story, Mikoto and her Familia moved to the city of Orario to earn money and send it back to support their shrine back home. There she develops a reputation as serious and deeply honorable, refusing to use underhanded tricks even when her life is on the line, such as turning down the idea of luring dangerous monsters onto a friendly Familia just to escape danger herself.
When the goddess Hestia needs help defending her small Familia against a much larger rival, Mikoto temporarily transfers over to join the fight, putting her own loyalty to Takemikazuchi's Familia on hold. Her sharp instincts prove crucial when she manages to locate the Hestia Knife, letting her and Bell Cranel escape a dangerous trap safely. Beneath her serious exterior, Mikoto is fiercely protective of the friends she has made, especially her childhood friend Haruhime, whose freedom she helps fight for later in the story.

The third season of Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, often called DanMachi, aired 12 episodes on Tokyo MX from October to December 2020. It was made by J.C.Staff and directed by Hideki Tachibana. The season was first planned for July 2020 but was delayed by COVID-19. It adapts volumes 9 to 11 of the light novels by Fujino Omori, with art by Suzuhito Yasuda. The opening song is "Over and Over" by Yuka Iguchi, and the ending is "Evergreen" by sajou no hana. The series takes place in Orario, a busy city built on top of the Dungeon, a giant underground maze full of monsters. Gods have come down to live among people, but with most of their powers sealed. Each god leads a group called a Familia. The members, called adventurers, go into the Dungeon to fight monsters and gather items. Bell Cranel is a young adventurer and the first member of the Hestia Familia. Hestia is a small, warm goddess who cares about him a lot. Over the first two seasons, Bell grew from a weak beginner into a fighter people now talk about. This season starts with a strange find. While exploring the 19th floor of the Dungeon, Bell comes across a hurt girl who can talk. But she is not human. She is a vouivre, a dragon-like monster. She is scared and alone. Bell decides to help her and brings her home, even though his friends are worried. Hestia lets her stay, and the girl gets the name Wiene. In many ways, she acts like a small child who is learning about the world for the first time. Keeping Wiene secret is very hard. People in Orario have hated and feared monsters for a long time, and many would hurt her on sight. Soon other groups, such as the Hermes Familia and the Ikelos Familia, start looking for her. The Guild, which runs the city's adventurer system, then gives the Hestia Familia a required job: take Wiene down to the 20th floor. There Bell meets the Xenos, a hidden community of monsters who can think and speak like people. Ouranos, the old god behind the Guild, hopes Bell's group can become a link between humans and these beings. His helper Fels, a hooded mage, also joins the story. The Ikelos Familia is one of the main dangers of the season. They hunt Xenos, and their attacks push the conflict toward the city itself. Familiar faces return too, including Liliruca, Welf, Mikoto, and Haruhime, who now form Bell's party. This season is more serious than the earlier ones. The main question is simple but hard: if a monster can feel fear and kindness, is it still a monster? Bell must choose between what the city expects of him and what he believes is right, and his choices come with a price. It is a strong pick for fans who want the series to move past dungeon battles into deeper questions about trust and prejudice.
