Ayumu Uehara becomes a school idol almost by accident, talked into it by her lifelong best friend and neighbor, Yu Takasaki, who has loved idols since she first saw the former club member Setsuna perform. Once she joins, Ayumu throws herself into the work with real dedication, determined to live up to the faith Yu has placed in her.
Underneath that hard-working attitude, though, Ayumu is shy and quick to doubt herself, often worrying that she isn't talented enough to keep up with the stronger performers around her. She leans on Yu for reassurance more than she probably should, and part of her growth across the series is learning to build her own confidence instead of constantly needing Yu nearby to feel sure of herself.
As the two childhood friends get older, the question of whether their separate paths and separate dreams might eventually pull them apart becomes a real source of anxiety for Ayumu, one that Kanata Konoe ends up helping her work through. Ayumu later performs as part of a subunit called A-Zu-Na alongside Setsuna and Shizuku Osaka, a step that finally lets her stand on a stage as a performer in her own right rather than always being thought of as Yu's quiet childhood friend.
