Ai Hoshino is a wildly popular idol and the face of a group called B-Komachi, managed by an agency called Strawberry Productions. Fans love her for her singing, her dancing, her bright positivity, and the genuine warmth she shows toward people around her, qualities that later surveys of young fans would point to as the reason so many of them admired her.
Behind the cheerful idol image, Ai is carrying a secret that could end her career: she becomes pregnant with twins and chooses to hide it from almost everyone so she can keep working as an idol while secretly raising her children. An obstetrician named Gorou Amamiya, who delivers the twins and admires Ai from a distance, is murdered the very night they are born, by the same obsessive fan who will later kill Ai herself, when the twins are about four years old, right in front of them.
Ai's emotional life is tangled up with a man named Hikaru Kamiki, whom she grows deeply attached to; her dependence on him, and her eventual decision to leave, play a part in pushing him toward despair, and he later manipulates the very fan who ends her life. After Ai's death, Miyako Saito, the head of her old talent agency, steps in and adopts her children. Although her time in the story is cut short, Ai's warmth, secrets, and tragic death continue to shape everything her children do afterward.
On screen

Oshi no Ko is a drama about the bright and dark sides of show business in Japan. The title means something like "my favorite's child." In Japanese fan culture, your "oshi" is the star you support the most. The story comes from a manga written by Aka Akasaka and drawn by Mengo Yokoyari. It ran in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump from 2020 to 2024, and more than 25 million copies are now in print. The anime was made by Doga Kobo. This first season has eleven episodes and aired in Japan from April to June 2023. Its very long first episode, about an hour and a half, was even shown in movie theaters before the TV run began. The story begins in a small country hospital. Gorou Amemiya is a doctor who helps women give birth. He is also a huge fan of Ai Hoshino, a young idol singer. In Japan, an idol is a pop star whose image is very carefully controlled, and fans often expect idols to stay single. So when Ai shows up at his hospital pregnant, it is a secret that could end her career. Gorou promises to help her. But before the babies are born, he is killed. Then he wakes up as one of Ai's newborn twins, with all of his old memories. He is now named Aquamarine, or Aqua. His twin sister, Ruby, also remembers an earlier life. She was once a sick young girl Gorou cared for, who also loved Ai. At first this sounds like a funny setup, and early scenes have a lot of humor. Two babies who secretly think like grown-ups are trying to support their idol mom. But the show quickly becomes darker and more serious. It turns into a mystery, and Aqua grows into a cold, clever young man with a hidden goal. Ruby, on the other hand, dreams of becoming an idol just like her mother. Along the way they meet Kana Arima, a former child actress who is struggling to stay relevant. What makes Oshi no Ko stand out is how much it shows about the real entertainment industry. The author talked with real idols, managers, and YouTubers to make it feel true. The show looks at reality TV, online hate, stage acting, and how young performers can be used by the adults around them. It asks how much of a star's smile is real, and what it costs them to keep smiling. The first season was a major hit. Its opening song, "Idol" by the duo YOASOBI, became a huge success in Japan and around the world. The manga won the Next Manga Award in 2021 and was nominated for many others. This show has heavy topics, including violence, so it fits older teens and adults best. For anyone curious about life behind the stage, or who likes a story that keeps changing what kind of story it is, Oshi no Ko is a strong pick.
