The Fable 2nd Season

Fans of the quiet assassin from Osaka will not have to wait long. The anime of The Fable is returning for more episodes. The news came on April 1, 2026, about a year and a half after the first run ended in September 2024. Later, the date was set for January 9, 2027 in Japan. Disney+ is expected to stream it again, as it did with the first part.

Most of the team is coming back. Tezuka Productions is again making the animation. Ryosuke Takahashi returns as director, and Yuya Takashima again handles the overall story plan for the episodes. Kyuma Oshita and Saki Hasegawa return as character designers. One thing is new: the music will now be written by Yo Tsuji.

To understand this sequel, it helps to know the setup. The show is based on the manga by Katsuhisa Minami, which won the Kodansha Manga Award in 2017. Its hero is a top professional killer known by the code name Fable. His boss ordered him to spend a year in Osaka living a plain life under the name Akira Sato, without killing anyone. His partner Yoko lives with him and pretends to be his sister. A local yakuza (Japanese crime gang) group, the Maguro Group, protects them while they hide.

The new episodes pick up after a tough time for the pair. According to the official story summary, the Sato siblings are getting better after they were attacked by a man named Utsubo. For a moment, things feel calm. A boss known as the Octopus throws a Christmas party, and Akira, Yoko, and their friend Misaki all go.

But trouble is growing inside the Maguro Group. Sunagawa, a gang member who has wanted more power for a long time, sees the holidays as his chance. He hires a professional killer named Yamaoka to help him take control of the group. This puts Akira in a hard place. He is still not allowed to kill, yet now another expert in his own line of work is in the same city, and the people Akira cares about could be caught in the middle.

Like the first part, this sequel should mix two very different moods. On one side are slow, funny scenes of Akira trying to act like a regular person. On the other side are tense crime plots and fast fights. Viewers who enjoyed the strange calm of the first season, and its deadpan humor (jokes told with a totally straight face), can expect the same style, now with a dangerous new rival on the way.
