About

Synopsis

The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu) is a school romantic comedy that begins in a very odd place: the inside of a lonely boy's head. It started as a web manga by Norio Sakurai in March 2018 and was later printed by the publisher Akita Shoten. The story became popular enough to win first place in the web manga category of the 2020 Next Manga Awards. It was also nominated for the Manga Taisho award. By 2023, more than three million copies were in circulation. The anime of the first season ran from April to June 2023. It was made by the studio Shin-Ei Animation, with Hiroaki Akagi as director and Jukki Hanada writing the scripts.

The story takes place in a normal Japanese middle school. The main character is Kyotaro Ichikawa, a quiet loner. He spends his free time in the school library, where he reads books about crimes and murder. He has a habit that most people would find alarming. In his imagination, he pictures terrible things happening to the popular kids in his class. These scenes are never real. They are a kind of private daydream, and they come from a boy who feels cut off from everyone around him. Kyotaro likes to act as if he is darker and more dangerous than other students. In Japan, this kind of behavior is often called chunibyo. It means a teenager who acts out a cool, secret, or special identity.

The person he thinks about most is Anna Yamada. She is tall and pretty, she works as a model, and almost everyone at school admires her. Kyotaro first sees her as the perfect target for his dark imagination. Then he starts to notice small things about her. She eats a lot of sweets. She is clumsy. She is easily worried, and she can get jealous. She is much more ordinary, and much more funny, than her image suggests. As the two spend more time near each other, she starts to treat him warmly, and his cold feelings begin to melt.

The heart of the show is the gap between what each person shows and what each person feels. Kyotaro has little confidence, and he finds it hard to talk to others. Still, he can be sharp when he watches how people act. Anna wants to be herself around him, even though she is a star to everyone else. Their small, awkward steps toward each other make up most of the story. Many scenes are simple, such as sharing a snack, walking home, or trying to say the right thing and failing.

Several side characters help shape the school world. Chihiro Kobayashi is Anna's best friend. Other classmates include Moeko Sekine, Serina Yoshida, and Sho Adachi. Kyotaro also has a younger sister named Kana, who gets her own spin-off manga later on. These people add humor, pressure, and sometimes comfort.

The tone mixes sweet romance with dry jokes. The humor comes from Kyotaro's over-the-top thoughts and from the awkward moments that follow. Some viewers find the cringe-style comedy hard to watch, and a few dislike the violent daydreams. Many others praise the warm feelings, the characters, and the careful art. The anime as a whole was well received, and its second season later placed first in several fan polls for a full season. If you like slow, honest school romances that also make you laugh, this first season is where the story starts.
