About
The second season of Akane-banashi was announced right after the first season ended in June 2026, and it is set to begin in January 2027. The first season, made by studio Zexcs and directed by Ayumu Watanabe, aired for 12 episodes in spring 2026 and is streaming on Netflix. The show adapts the hit Weekly Shounen Jump manga by Yuki Suenaga and Takamasa Moue, which has sold millions of copies and won high praise in Japan.
The series is about rakugo, a traditional Japanese art where one person kneels on a stage and tells a long, often funny story. The performer plays every role alone, using voice, face, a fan, and a small cloth. Performers belong to schools and move up through ranks. New learners start as apprentices. Next comes zenza, a beginner rank where the performer opens the show and also does many backstage jobs. After that is futatsume, and at the very top is shin'uchi, the rank of a full master who can take students.
Akane's goal comes from her past. Her father, known on stage as Shinta Arakawa, was thrown out of rakugo during his test to become a shin'uchi. The person who did it was Issho Arakawa, the head of the school. Akane decided to reach that same top rank, both for her own dream and to show what her father's art was worth. In the first season, she trained in secret under Shiguma Arakawa, her father's former teacher, and showed again and again that she had real talent.
Now Akane has finished high school and steps into rakugo as a true professional. She officially joins Shiguma's group and gets a new stage name, Akane Arakawa. This season follows what the series calls the Zenza Arc, her life at the bottom rank. A big part of it happens at Yasaka-tei, a lively traditional theater where rakugo is performed every day. There, Akane is surrounded by masters with many years of experience. She must learn the rules of the theater, help behind the stage, and perform before older and more skilled storytellers. Every show is a chance to learn, but also a chance to fail in front of people who matter.
This new stage changes the feeling of the story. In school, Akane was a gifted outsider. In the theater, she is a newcomer who has to earn respect from the ground up. Viewers can expect more performers from different rakugo schools, more real classic stories, and more moments where Akane must find a way to win a crowd that does not know her. The show keeps its mix of drama, humor, and the excitement of live performance, and it continues to explain rakugo in a way that new viewers can follow.
This season is best for people who saw the first one, since it builds on Akane's training and her family story. For fans of stories about hard work, art, and growing up, it is a chance to watch Akane take her first real steps toward the top.
