A Silent Voice

A Silent Voice is a 2016 anime film from Kyoto Animation, a studio known for beautiful, gentle artwork. It was directed by Naoko Yamada, with a script by Reiko Yoshida and music by Kensuke Ushio. It opened in Japan on September 17, 2016. The film is based on the manga (Japanese comic) by Yoshitoki Oima. It is a quiet, emotional drama about hurting someone, feeling sorry, and trying to do better.

The story begins in elementary school. Shoya Ishida is a restless, bored boy who is always looking for something exciting. One day, a new girl named Shoko Nishimiya joins his class. Shoko was born deaf. She talks with her classmates by writing in a small notebook, and she tries very hard to fit in. Instead of helping her, Shoya starts to tease and torment her. Other kids join in, and the teachers do little to stop it. In the end, the cruelty goes too far. After that, the other children put all the blame on Shoya, and he is left with no friends at all.

Years later, Shoya is a high school student. He feels deep guilt about what he did to Shoko. He keeps away from people and can hardly look anyone in the eye. The film shows this in a clever way. Big X marks cover the faces of the people around him, to show how cut off he feels. Shoya decides he must find Shoko again. He has learned sign language, a way of talking with hand shapes and movements, so he can finally speak to her in her own way.

When the two meet again, a slow and careful friendship begins. Other people also enter the story. Yuzuru is Shoko's younger sister, who is fiercely protective of her. Tomohiro Nagatsuka is a lonely boy who decides that Shoya is his best friend. Some old classmates return too, including Naoka Ueno, Miyoko Sahara, Miki Kawai, and Satoshi Mashiba. Each of them has their own memory of what happened long ago, and their own feelings about it.

The film deals with hard subjects in an honest and gentle way. It looks at school bullying and at how people with disabilities are often left out. It also asks whether a person can truly make up for past mistakes, and why forgiving yourself can be the hardest step of all. Viewers should know that the film also touches on thoughts of self-harm. The movie treats these topics with care, not shock.

A Silent Voice was a big success. It earned about 30.8 million US dollars around the world and holds a very high score of 95 percent on the review site Rotten Tomatoes. It also won Best Animation at the Japanese Movie Critics Awards. Many viewers remember it for its soft colors, its careful sound design, and the way it makes small moments feel very big.
