Yuzuru Nishimiya

A Silent Voice is a 2016 anime film from Kyoto Animation, a studio known for beautiful, gentle artwork. It was directed by Naoko Yamada, with a script by Reiko Yoshida and music by Kensuke Ushio. Big X marks cover the faces of the people around him, to show how cut off he feels. Shoya decides he must find Shoko again. He has learned sign language, a way of talking with hand shapes and movements, so he can finally speak to her in her own way. When the two meet again, a slow and careful friendship begins. Other people also enter the story. Yuzuru is Shoko's younger sister, who is fiercely protective of her. Tomohiro Nagatsuka is a lonely boy who decides that Shoya is his best friend. Some old classmates return too, including Naoka Ueno, Miyoko Sahara, Miki Kawai, and Satoshi Mashiba. Each of them has their own memory of what happened long ago, and their own feelings about it. The film deals with hard subjects in an honest and gentle way. It looks at school bullying and at how people with disabilities are often left out. It also asks whether a person can truly make up for past mistakes, and why forgiving yourself can be the hardest step of all. Viewers should know that the film also touches on thoughts of self-harm.
