Star Detective Precure! crosses over with Ojamajo Doremi in an October 25 Halloween episode set in 1999
Episode 39 dresses the CUREtto Detective Agency as Doremi's witch apprentices, with a crossover illustration by Yoshihiko Umakoshi, Doremi's character designer, and tie-in goods on sale from October 16.
Star Detective Precure! is set in 1999, and in that year Ojamajo Doremi was on the air. Toei Animation is leaning into the overlap: episode 39, "Ojamajo na Halloween♪," airing in Japan on October 25, is an official crossover with the witch-apprentice series that premiered that very year.
In the Halloween story, the quartet from the CUREtto Detective Agency put on outfits modeled on Doremi's apprentice witches as they pursue someone from the Phantom Thieves' Guild. In the show's setting, Makoto Mirai City, Ojamajo Doremi is a hit on TV, and producer Soya Araki has explained that Doremi's girls appear in that form, as an anime the characters watch, rather than stepping into the story in person.
Yoshihiko Umakoshi, who designed the characters for Ojamajo Doremi and later for HeartCatch Precure!, drew a dedicated crossover illustration of Cure Answer meeting Doremi. Goods built on it and on the costume designs went on sale from October 16. BSS Sanin Broadcasting viewers will see the episode a week later, on November 1.
The two shows share more than a calendar. Both are Toei productions, and Doremi producer Hiromi Seki said it moved her to recognize methods used by the earlier Doremi directors in this episode's storyboards. Ojamajo Doremi, known in English as Magical DoReMi, began on February 7, 1999, with a 51-episode first season and several sequels.
Star Detective Precure! is the 23rd series in the Precure franchise and premiered on February 1. Its heroine, Anna Akechi, slips back in time from 2027 to 1999 on her 14th birthday, teams up with aspiring detective Mikuru, and fights the Phantom Thieves while working out how her time travel happened. Crunchyroll has streamed it since February across the Americas, Europe, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East and the CIS.
