Wenge Kong, known to his Japanese classmates simply as China, arrives at Katase High School carrying real shame: he was removed from his country's national table tennis team, and he travels to Japan hoping to redeem himself abroad before eventually returning home. He projects an outward confidence that hides a lot of quiet resentment and hurt pride underneath.
His original plan is simple: beat Ryuichi Kazama, the dominant captain nicknamed Dragon, and prove he still belongs among the best. Along the way, though, he runs into two players he never expected to matter much, Yutaka Hoshino, known as Peco, and the reserved Makoto Tsukimoto, known as Smile. Peco manages to beat him in an early match, a loss that rattles Kong's confidence, while Smile later deliberately lets him win a different match out of quiet consideration for what Kong is going through.
It is ultimately Dragon who reveals Kong's full national team history to Smile, opening up just how much weight Kong has been carrying alone. Through his matches with Peco and Smile, Kong finds something closer to genuine competition and respect than he expected to find so far from home, becoming a more complete rival than a simple obstacle for the story's two leads.

Ping Pong the Animation is an 11-episode TV anime from 2014, directed by Masaaki Yuasa and made by Tatsunoko Production. It aired from April 11 to June 20, 2014, on Fuji TV's noitaminA block, a late-night slot known for anime that aims at adults and tries new things. The show is based on the manga Ping Pong by Taiyo Matsumoto, an artist famous for his rough, unusual drawing style. Yuasa kept that look, so the show has wobbly lines, odd camera angles, and split screens that feel like comic panels. The story is about table tennis, but it is really about people. At Katase High School, two boys have been friends since they were small. Makoto Tsukimoto is quiet and almost never shows feelings. His nickname is "Smile," as a joke, because he hardly ever smiles. Yutaka Hoshino, called "Peco," is the opposite. He is loud, cheerful, a bit lazy, and very sure of himself. Both boys are strong players. Peco has always been seen as the star, and Smile seems happy to stay in his shadow, even though he may be the more gifted of the two. The club's old coach, Jo Koizumi, sees something special in Smile. He believes Smile could become a great player if he just wanted to win. But Smile treats the game like a simple way to pass time, and he holds himself back. The coach pushes him hard, and much of the show is about whether Smile will choose to fight for victory or not. At the same time, Peco faces his own crisis. After a painful loss, he starts to doubt himself and stops putting in the effort. Other players bring their own stories. Kong Wenge is a skilled player who has come from China. He acts proud and cool, but inside he feels ashamed about not making it at home. Ryuichi Kazama, known as "Dragon," is the captain of the powerful Kaio Academy team, and he carries huge pressure to win at all costs. Manabu Sakuma, nicknamed "Akuma" (which means "demon"), was once a friend of Smile and Peco. He now plays for Kaio and works very hard to make up for having less natural talent. Each of these players asks the same question in a different way: why do I play, and what happens if I lose? The show uses sports to talk about talent, effort, friendship, and finding a reason to keep going. Matches are tense and exciting, but the quiet moments between games matter just as much. The music and sound design help a lot, making each hit of the small ball feel sharp and loud. Some viewers find the drawing style strange at first, but many grow to love it. Ping Pong the Animation was praised by critics and fans alike. It won the Grand Prize for Television Animation of the Year at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2015, and it was a jury selection at the Japan Media Arts Festival. Sites such as Polygon, Crunchyroll, and IGN later named it one of the best anime of the 2010s. It is short, easy to finish in a weekend, and a strong choice even for people who do not usually watch sports shows.
