Manabu Sakuma, nicknamed Demon, grew up playing table tennis alongside Yutaka Hoshino, known as Peco, and that childhood friendship never fully lets go of its competitive edge. Unlike Peco's natural talent, Sakuma has had to claw his way up through sheer effort, compensating for weaker raw ability with relentless hard work and training.

That effort comes with a chip on his shoulder. Sakuma is combative and constantly fixated on proving he deserves to stand next to Peco as an equal, a rivalry that only grows sharper once Sakuma joins the rival Kaio Academy team. His obsession with beating Peco sometimes overshadows his matches against other opponents, including a loss to the reserved Katase player Makoto Tsukimoto, known as Smile, a defeat that stings precisely because it comes from Peco's quiet best friend.

Sakuma's story takes a darker turn when his aggression spills outside the sport entirely. After assaulting a passerby in a moment of anger, he is suspended from Kaio Academy and removed from the table tennis team altogether, a harsh consequence of the same combative drive that once pushed him to improve as a player.

Ping Pong the Animation is an 11-episode TV anime from 2014, directed by Masaaki Yuasa and made by Tatsunoko Production. It aired from April 11 to June 20, 2014, on Fuji TV's noitaminA block, a late-night slot known for anime that aims at adults and tries new things. The show is based on the manga Ping Pong by Taiyo Matsumoto, an artist famous for his rough, unusual drawing style. Yuasa kept that look, so the show has wobbly lines, odd camera angles, and split screens that feel like comic panels. The story is about table tennis, but it is really about people. At Katase High School, two boys have been friends since they were small. Makoto Tsukimoto is quiet and almost never shows feelings. His nickname is "Smile," as a joke, because he hardly ever smiles. Yutaka Hoshino, called "Peco," is the opposite. He is loud, cheerful, a bit lazy, and very sure of himself. Both boys are strong players. Peco has always been seen as the star, and Smile seems happy to stay in his shadow, even though he may be the more gifted of the two. The club's old coach, Jo Koizumi, sees something special in Smile. He believes Smile could become a great player if he just wanted to win. But Smile treats the game like a simple way to pass time, and he holds himself back. The coach pushes him hard, and much of the show is about whether Smile will choose to fight for victory or not. At the same time, Peco faces his own crisis. After a painful loss, he starts to doubt himself and stops putting in the effort. Other players bring their own stories. Kong Wenge is a skilled player who has come from China. He acts proud and cool, but inside he feels ashamed about not making it at home. Ryuichi Kazama, known as "Dragon," is the captain of the powerful Kaio Academy team, and he carries huge pressure to win at all costs. Manabu Sakuma, nicknamed "Akuma" (which means "demon"), was once a friend of Smile and Peco. He now plays for Kaio and works very hard to make up for having less natural talent. Each of these players asks the same question in a different way: why do I play, and what happens if I lose? The show uses sports to talk about talent, effort, friendship, and finding a reason to keep going. Matches are tense and exciting, but the quiet moments between games matter just as much. The music and sound design help a lot, making each hit of the small ball feel sharp and loud. Some viewers find the drawing style strange at first, but many grow to love it. Ping Pong the Animation was praised by critics and fans alike. It won the Grand Prize for Television Animation of the Year at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2015, and it was a jury selection at the Japan Media Arts Festival. Sites such as Polygon, Crunchyroll, and IGN later named it one of the best anime of the 2010s. It is short, easy to finish in a weekend, and a strong choice even for people who do not usually watch sports shows.
