Ryo Kuroshio is a young yakuza member who works directly under Tsuyoshi Ebihara, a mid-level figure in the criminal underworld surrounding the story of The Fable. As Ebihara's subordinate and apprentice, Ryo is still learning the ropes of that dangerous world, picking up habits and attitudes from the more experienced men around him.

Despite coming from a world built on violence and intimidation, Ryo ends up looking up to the mysterious Akira Satou, the retired hitman hiding out in Osaka under a fake identity. That admiration puts him in an interesting position: a low-ranking gangster who respects a man whose true, far more lethal past he has no idea about.

Ryo's storyline often intersects with the chaos that follows wherever Akira goes, as Osaka's criminal underworld keeps colliding with Akira's attempts to live a quiet, normal life. Through those encounters, Ryo represents the ordinary, small-time side of the yakuza world, a contrast to the far more dangerous professional killers operating just beneath the surface of the city.

The Fable is a crime story with a strange, dry sense of humor. It is based on a manga by Katsuhisa Minami. The manga ran in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 2014 to 2019 and filled 22 books. Later it got a sequel called The Second Contact, and a third part started in 2025. The series has sold more than 25 million copies and won the Kodansha Manga Award in 2017. Before the anime, it was also made into two live-action movies starring Junichi Okada. The anime was made by Tezuka Productions. It aired on Nippon TV from April to September 2024, with 25 episodes, and it streams on Disney+ and Hulu. The main character is a hired killer. He is one of the most skilled people in his line of work, and he is famous in the crime world. His code name is Fable. One day his boss gives him a very unusual order. Fable must take a break for one full year. He has to move to Osaka, live a quiet life like everyone else, and not take a single life during that time. So Fable takes a fake name, Akira Sato. His partner Yoko goes with him and pretends to be his younger sister. Yoko helps him on jobs and drives for him. She has a perfect memory and can drink a huge amount of alcohol without getting drunk. A yakuza group (a Japanese crime gang) called the Maguro Group agrees to hide the two of them. Its chief, Hiroshi Hamada, takes them in. But not everyone in the gang is happy about this. A captain named Ebihara does not trust the quiet stranger at all. Much of the fun comes from watching a deadly expert try to act like an ordinary person. Akira is calm, quiet, and shows very little feeling, so everyday life often looks odd when he does it. The show plays this for deadpan jokes. Deadpan means the jokes are told with a straight face, as if nothing funny is happening. People in the gang also start to wonder who this strange man really is and what he did before coming to Osaka. The story is not only comedy, though. Akira meets Misaki Shimizu, a young woman who works several jobs to pay off her father's debts. She used to be a gravure idol (a model for swimsuit photo books), and bad men try to use her past to force her into sex work. At the same time, ambitious gang members start pushing for power inside the Maguro Group. Kojima, who has just come out of prison, wants a bigger role. Sunagawa, who runs an illegal business, sees Kojima as a threat. Akira wants to stay out of trouble. But when people near him are in danger, he has to find a way to act without breaking his promise not to kill. The show mixes calm daily life with sudden, sharp action. The cast includes Kazuyuki Okitsu as Akira, Miyuki Sawashiro as Yoko, Kana Hanazawa as Misaki, and Akio Otsuka as Ebihara. Real-life comedian Jun Fukushima also appears as a comedian named Jackal Tomioka. For viewers who like stories about a dangerous man learning to live a gentle life, The Fable offers tension, warmth, and many quiet laughs.
