Mayuri Kurotsuchi commands the 12th Division of the Gotei 13, the organization of soul reaper captains who protect the balance between the worlds of the living and the dead, and he also leads the Shinigami Research Institute, a position he gained after the previous captain was exiled. Unlike most of his fellow captains, Mayuri treats battle as a science experiment first and a fight second.
During the Wandenreich invasion, he becomes fascinated by an enemy named Pernida rather than simply trying to destroy it, choosing instead to study exactly how its strange attacks work so he can develop a counter. He even deduces Pernida's attack method well before anyone else figures it out, a sign of how much his curiosity drives him even in life-or-death situations. His own custom technique built to counter Pernida ultimately fails, a rare setback for a captain used to outsmarting his opponents through research rather than raw strength.
His lieutenant, Nemu, is actually an artificial being he created himself, closer to a daughter built by his own hands than an ordinary subordinate. She heals his arm after Pernida destroys it and later sacrifices herself protecting him, a sign of devotion that Mayuri, for all his coldness, clearly relies on. He also keeps a careful, suspicious eye on Yhwach's lieutenant Jugram Haschwalth, expecting the Wandenreich to have prepared countermeasures against the Soul Society's newest techniques.

BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War - The Separation is the second part of the final Bleach anime, based on the last story arc of Tite Kubo's long-running manga. Studio Pierrot made it, and it aired on TV Tokyo from July 8 to September 30, 2023. It has 13 episodes, which are episodes 14 to 26 of the Thousand-Year Blood War series. An English dub later aired on Adult Swim's Toonami block. You need to watch the first part of Thousand-Year Blood War before this one, and ideally the original Bleach series too. Bleach is about Ichigo Kurosaki, a teenage boy who can see ghosts. He became a Soul Reaper, a kind of warrior who protects living people from evil spirits and guides souls to the afterlife. Soul Reapers live in a world called the Soul Society and are split into squads, each led by a captain. Their main weapon is a sword called a zanpakuto. The strongest Soul Reapers can unlock its final, most powerful form, called Bankai. In this last arc, a hidden enemy returns. The Wandenreich is an army of Quincy, humans who fight with bows and arrows made of spirit energy. Long ago the Soul Reapers almost wiped them out, and now they want revenge. Their leader is Yhwach, the ancient and almost god-like father of all Quincy. In the first part, his army struck the Soul Society by surprise. They used a trick to steal the Bankai of several captains, and many Soul Reapers were lost. The Separation starts after that disaster. The Soul Reapers are hurt and grieving, and they know the enemy will come back. The captains who lost their Bankai must learn to fight without it. Ichigo is taken to the Royal Palace, home of Squad Zero, the most powerful Soul Reapers of all, who guard the highest level of their world. There he goes through hard training to grow strong enough for what is coming. Meanwhile, there is a painful surprise. Uryu Ishida, Ichigo's friend and long-time rival, who is himself a Quincy, has joined Yhwach. Yhwach even names him as his successor. When the Quincy army attacks again, the war grows bigger and more desperate. This part of the story focuses on big battles, sudden twists, and loss. Many side characters get their own fights and moments to shine, so it often feels like a war story with a large cast rather than just Ichigo's tale. The title, The Separation, points to friendships pulling apart and old bonds being tested. The animation is sharp and dramatic, with strong colors and heavy action, and it is more violent than the original Bleach TV show. Fans had waited about ten years for this final arc to be animated after the first Bleach anime ended in 2012, so this series was a big event. The story continues in Part 3, The Conflict.
