Holo

Holo is a centuries-old wolf spirit who used to watch over the wheat harvest in a small farming town called Pasloe, in the far north. Villagers once worshiped her as their harvest god, but over generations they stopped needing her blessing and almost forgot she existed. Lonely and unwanted, she hides inside a wagon full of wheat and leaves town with a traveling merchant, Kraft Lawrence, hoping to find her way back to her long-lost homeland of Yoitsu.

Though she looks like a teenage girl, with a wolf's tail and ears she can barely hide under her cloak, Holo is sharp-tongued, proud, and much older and wiser than she looks. She teases Lawrence constantly and outsmarts him in business deals, using centuries of experience to spot a bad trade from a mile away. Underneath the confident act, though, she is quietly afraid of being left alone again, since a human companion will not live nearly as long as she will.

As the two travel together through fairs, markets, and small kingdoms, trading goods and dodging merchant rivals like Nora Arendt, Holo and Lawrence grow closer, and what starts as a convenient partnership slowly turns into real affection. Her sharp mind for numbers and her blunt honesty make her an unusual partner for a merchant, but also exactly the kind of partner Lawrence needs.
