Bjorn

Bjorn is the second-in-command of Askeladd's band of Viking mercenaries in Vinland Saga. He is a big, powerful warrior and one of Askeladd's most trusted men. He fights mainly because he enjoys battle, and he rarely questions the orders he is given.

Bjorn is also a berserker. In old Norse tales, a berserker is a warrior who fights in a wild, unstoppable fury. Bjorn reaches this state by eating certain mushrooms, which make him far stronger and more fearless in combat. In that state, he is one of the most dangerous fighters in the whole band.

On the surface, Bjorn seems like a rough and simple man who lives only for fighting. But there is much more feeling inside him than he shows. He is loyal to Askeladd, and over their long years together, he comes to care about his leader deeply. During the band's mission to protect Prince Canute, Bjorn is badly wounded while defending the prince. That moment brings his true feelings about Askeladd to the surface in one of the most touching scenes of the first season.
