Rebuild World

Rebuild World started as a web novel by the writer Nahuse. It first appeared in February 2017 on Shosetsuka ni Naro and Kakuyomu, two Japanese websites where anyone can post stories. In May 2019 it became a printed light novel series from ASCII Media Works, with art by Gin, mechanical designs by cell, and world designs by yish. A manga by Kirihito Ayamura began that same year in Dengeki Maoh magazine, and J-Novel Club sells the novels in English. The books placed fifth in the 2020 Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! ranking.

A TV anime was first announced at Anime Expo 2023, but fans then heard almost nothing for three years. In October 2026 the project returned with its first key visual and main staff. The studio is Raging Bull. Tsukasa Sakurai is chief director, Shingo Uchida is director, Naoki Tozuka writes the series scripts, and Hiromi Kato designs the characters. No air date has been announced yet.

The story takes place many years after a great disaster ended the old age of humans. The cities of that lost time, called the Old World, now lie in ruins. They are full of amazing machines and technology that no one today fully understands. Finding even one of these items, called a relic, can make a person rich. But the ruins are also guarded by old security robots, strange monsters, and living weapons that still attack anyone who comes close.

The people who go into the ruins to find relics are called hunters. Akira is a young orphan who lives in the slums, the poorest and most dangerous part of the city. He is hungry, weak, and has only a cheap gun. He decides to become a hunter anyway, because staying in the slums feels like a slow death. On his own, his chances of coming back alive are very small.

Then, inside a ruin, Akira meets Alpha. She looks like a beautiful woman, but she is not really there. Only Akira can see and hear her, through a kind of augmented reality, meaning images that appear on top of the real world. Alpha seems to be an advanced AI. She offers him a deal: she will teach him, guide him, and help him fight, and in return he will one day do a job for her. Akira accepts, but he cannot be sure what Alpha truly wants.

Rebuild World is a hard-edged science fiction action story. It focuses on survival, guns, and the slow climb of a poor kid in a cruel world. Much of the tension comes from the partnership between Akira and Alpha, which is helpful but never fully trusting. Fans of gritty, post-disaster adventures with a strong sense of mystery will find a lot to enjoy here.
