KAIJU GIRL CARAMELISE

Kaiju Girl Caramelise is a sweet and funny romantic comedy with a monster movie twist. The word "kaiju" is Japanese for huge beasts like Godzilla that stomp through cities. The story comes from a manga by Spica Aoki that began in Monthly Comic Alive in February 2018. It had reached ten volumes by July 2026, and Yen Press publishes it in English. The first two English volumes were chosen for the American Library Association's Great Graphic Novels for Teens lists in 2020 and 2021.

The anime was made by Liden Films and directed by Teruyuki Omine. It has 12 episodes and aired from July to September 2026. Crunchyroll streamed it in many regions.

The heroine is Kuroe Akaishi, a shy teen who keeps to herself. She wears dark clothes and hides from others, and her classmates think she is creepy. The reason is a secret. Kuroe has an unusual illness that no doctor can cure. When she feels something very strongly, parts of her body start to change. Horns or scales might appear, and if things go too far, she can grow into a towering beast.

That is a big problem for a girl in her teens, because the strongest feelings of all are romantic ones. And that is exactly what happens when Arata Minami starts paying attention to her. Arata is the most admired guy at her school: handsome, friendly, and kind. He does not seem scared of Kuroe at all. Every time he smiles at her or says something nice, her heart races, and her body starts to go out of control. She has to find ways to hide her changes while still getting to know him.

Much of the comedy comes from these moments, where a cute romantic scene suddenly turns into a scramble to hide horns or a tail. But the series also has a softer, deeper side. Critics have called it an enjoyable blend of teen story and metaphor. Kuroe's changing body can be read as a symbol of growing up, of feeling out of place, and of being afraid that others will see your true self and run away.

The themes include self-acceptance, body image, first romance, and learning to trust other people. The art is bright and colorful, and the kaiju scenes are played for fun rather than horror.
