Grand Blue Dreaming

Grand Blue Dreaming is a college comedy based on a manga written by Kenji Inoue and drawn by Kimitake Yoshioka. It has run in Kodansha's magazine good! Afternoon since 2014 and had sold more than 8 million copies by 2023. The studio Zero-G made the 12-episode anime, directed by Shinji Takamatsu, and it aired in the summer of 2018. After a long break, a second season came out in 2025, and more followed.

The story is set on the Izu Peninsula, a warm coastal area south-west of Tokyo that is known for clear water, hot springs and small beach towns. It is a real place, and the show uses its sea views and bright summer light well. When the camera goes under the water, the mood changes completely. Everything turns quiet, blue and calm.

Iori Kitahara is a first-year university student who is studying engineering. He moves to Izu to live above his uncle's diving shop, which is called Grand Blue. He dreams of a normal, fun college life, with nice friends and maybe a girlfriend. On his very first day, however, he runs into a crowd of huge, loud, almost naked older students. They belong to Peek a Boo, the local college diving club, and they seem to care much more about drinking and wild parties than about diving.

Before he knows it, Iori is part of the club. The two leaders, Shinji Tokita and Ryujiro Kotobuki, are big, muscular upperclassmen who take off their clothes at almost every chance. Iori also makes a new friend, Kohei Imamura, a handsome classmate who turns out to be a very serious anime fan. Together, Iori and Kohei get pulled into one crazy event after another. Iori's cousins, the sisters Chisa and Nanaka Kotegawa, also live at the shop. Chisa is calm and cool, loves the sea, and is not impressed by Iori's behavior at all.

Most of the show is fast, loud comedy. It uses silly faces, misunderstandings, lies that get out of hand, and slapstick, which means physical jokes like falling or crashing into things. There is a lot of drinking and bare skin, so the humor is for older teens and adults. Please note that the show makes fun of heavy drinking; it does not suggest real people do it.

But the series has a quiet second side. Slowly, Iori starts to learn how to dive. He studies the rules, practices breathing, and goes under the surface with the others. The first time he sees fish, light and coral around him, he understands why the club members love the ocean. These scenes are some of the most beautiful parts of the show, and they are a nice break from the noise.

Many fans say Grand Blue is one of the funniest anime ever made. It is a story about friendship, being young and a bit foolish, and finding a hobby you truly love. There is also a live-action film from 2020.
