About
Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is an anime series based on a hit PlayStation video game. The original game, Ghost of Tsushima, was made by Sucker Punch Productions and came out in 2020. It is set on Tsushima, a real island between Japan and Korea, during the first Mongol invasion of Japan in the year 1274. In that game, a samurai named Jin Sakai fights to save the island after the invading army crushes its warriors.
The anime does not retell Jin's story. Instead it is based on Legends, a multiplayer part of the game that was added in October 2020. In Legends, players team up online. They choose from four kinds of warrior: the samurai, who can take a lot of hits; the hunter, who fights with a bow from far away; the ronin, a masterless warrior who can heal friends and call dogs into battle; and the assassin, who strikes fast from the shadows. A storyteller named Gyozen tells the tales that players act out.
The biggest difference is the mood. The main game tries to feel like real history. Legends is full of magic and monsters from Japanese folk tales and myths. The warriors fight supernatural enemies and travel into strange, ghostly worlds. A well-known mission, The Tale of Iyo, is a big raid made for a team of four players. The anime is expected to bring this mythic, spooky side of Tsushima to the screen.
The team behind the show is very strong. Takanobu Mizuno is the director. He is known for The Duel, a samurai-style short film in the Star Wars: Visions series. The story is written by Gen Urobuchi of Nitroplus, a famous writer known for dark and surprising anime stories, together with Ken Maejima. The animation is made by Kamikaze Douga, a studio known for stylish computer-made visuals, with Hayate. Aniplex is producing, and Sony Music is in charge of the music.
The partners have said they want to show traditional samurai style with movie-like storytelling and striking pictures. Crunchyroll's leader called the planned art style bold. The series was announced in January 2025 at Sony's press event at CES, a big technology show in Las Vegas. At Anime Expo 2026, the team showed the first posters and some concept art.
No cast, episode count, or detailed plot has been shared yet. Crunchyroll will be the only place to stream it, and it was first announced for 2027. If you liked the game's mix of sword fights, beautiful scenery, and old legends, this is a series to watch for.
