White Fox will adapt How I Became King by Eating Monsters as a 2027 TV anime
The Re:Zero studio is taking on Daken's light novels about a boy prince who dodges poisoned meals by hunting monsters; a dedicated site and preview art went live on October 9.
A boy prince who can't trust his own dinner is the hero of White Fox's next TV series. Label King Records switched on a dedicated site for Monster no Niku wo Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken (How I Became King by Eating Monsters) on October 9, setting the broadcast for 2027 and showing off preview art stamped with the tagline "喰え、生きるために" ("Eat, so that you live").
The site sums the story up as a "狂食英雄ファンタジー", a hero fantasy powered by appetite. Mars, a prince of Farune barely twelve years old, is convinced assassins have tampered with nearly every dish set before him. Rather than starve, he slips past the palace walls into beast-filled woods and cooks whatever he manages to kill. During one such outing he crosses paths with a crimson-haired woman wielding a greatsword who wants to train him, and who already understands what he has half-discovered: devouring monster flesh builds strength. One misunderstanding later, he is headed, very much against his will, toward the crown as the mightiest of kings.
White Fox's credit on the site points to the Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World series. Apart from the studio, no production staff have been named, and the cast page still reads "coming soon".
Daken, whose other work includes Dare ga Yuusha wo Koroshita ka, first serialized the story online before Micro Magazine's GCN line put it into print with art by Shiba; the series is now seven volumes deep. Cross Infinite World handles the translation for readers outside Japan.
There is a comic adaptation too, drawn by Karin Suzuragi for Hakusensha's Young Animal Zero from the start of 2024 and now three collected books long. Daken, Shiba and Suzuragi all marked the announcement with messages and artwork on the site.
