A thousand-year hunt for a sealed-away queen is heading to television. The Record of a Fallen Vampire (Vampire Juujikai), the Square Enix manga written by Kyo Shirodaira and drawn by Yuri Kimura, will air as a TV anime in 2027. Pony Canyon broke the news on October 5, launching an official website plus X and Instagram accounts, a teaser visual and a trailer on the same day.

The gap between page and screen is unusually long. The manga debuted in Monthly Shonen Gangan in 2003, which means the adaptation arrives roughly 24 years after the first chapter.

Strauss, Adelheid and the Black Swan

Rose Red Strauss is the last ruler of the Night Kingdom, a realm of vampires that fell a millennium ago after Queen Adelheid unleashed a power capable of ending the world. Humans sealed her away, and Strauss has spent the centuries since roaming alone in search of that seal. The hunt has turned both humans and dhampirs against him, since neither wants Adelheid back. He also faces the Black Swan, a curse reborn generation after generation inside young women, each incarnation more dangerous than the last.

The teaser image captures that standoff: Strauss looks down against a blood-red moon while Bridget squares up to him, greatsword in hand.

The team

Mankyu, the director of The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, is both directing and overseeing series composition. jimao, whose credits include Mechanical Marie, adapts the character designs, and Evan Call, the composer behind Violet Evergarden and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, scores the series. Animation production is split between ZERO-G and Liber.

Two voices are confirmed so far. Yuma Uchida plays Strauss, and Aino Shimada plays the dhampir Bridget Irving Frostheart. Broadcasters, streaming partners and a premiere date have yet to be revealed.

The manga, then and now

Shirodaira and Kimura's original wrapped up in 2007 after nine collected volumes. In English it first appeared from Viz Media between 2008 and 2010; Yen Press later put out the complete nine-book set on one day in December 2014, and since mid-2025 it has also been readable on the Manga Up! Global app.

The anime is not the franchise's only new chapter. A follow-up manga, Vampire Juujikai: Inu ni wa Inu no Uta, is slated to start running in the same magazine from October 9, 2026.
