Monster Strike trades monster battles for a grim reaper romance in Mera×Death, airing January 5
MIXI's mobile-game franchise returns to TV with *Mera×Death: Shinigami to Boku no Ijō na Koi*, a love story between a boy and a shinigami that premieres January 5, 2027 on TOKYO MX.
A boy falling for Death itself is not the pitch most people expect from Monster Strike, the franchise that grew out of MIXI's 2013 mobile RPG and has spent its anime life on creature fights. Its next series, Mera×Death: Shinigami to Boku no Ijō na Koi (roughly "the strange love between me and the grim reaper"), was confirmed on Sunday, September 27, together with a promotional video and a first key visual.
Broadcast starts on January 5, 2027, on TOKYO MX plus ten more Japanese channels, with streaming services also carrying it.
Kenta Kushitani is in the director's chair, with animation handled jointly by Qzil.la and studio keel and ARCH credited for production. Kushitani's past credits include work on episodes of Birdie Wing, Shangri-La Frontier and Kaiju No. 8. Series composition and scripts belong to Daisuke Ōhigashi, a writer on Fate/strange Fake, while Tadashi Sakazaki, whose résumé includes the Zoids franchise, is designing the cast. Music is a three-way split: Natsuki Hamada works alongside Kana Hashiguchi (Classroom of the Elite) and veteran Masaru Yokoyama (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans). Fumihiko Ōtera oversees sound at Magic Capsule.
The game has already spawned several web anime seasons, a TV series and three theatrical films. Its most recent anime, the 10-episode Monster Strike: Deadverse Reloaded, can be watched subtitled in English on Amazon Prime Video; Inori Minase, Kana Hanazawa, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Kana Ichinose are among its voices.
