Cyber Formula's first new animation in 27 years hits Japanese theaters February 19
*Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA*, a hand-drawn sequel short to 1998's *SIN*, will screen alongside an HD movie edition of *EARLY DAYS RENEWAL*, with Mitsuo Fukuda directing and the original leads returning.
Hayato Kazami is back on the grid. Bandai Namco Filmworks has dated Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA, the new short that picks up after the 1998 OVA SIN, for February 19, 2027 in Japanese cinemas. It will not play alone: the program pairs it with a digitally restored HD "movie edition" of EARLY DAYS RENEWAL, the two-part compilation of the 1991 TV series, re-edited under series director Mitsuo Fukuda.
Fukuda both directs and writes the short, which the staff says is drawn by hand without CG. Inven Global puts its runtime at about six minutes and notes that nothing new has been animated for the property in 27 years. Shōji Kawamori, the series' original machine designer, returns to create the new Cyber machine, the "Zenith Asurada AKF-S0/G".
The familiar voices are back too. Jun-ichi Kanemaru reprises Hayato; Bleed Kaga is again Toshihiko Seki, Asuka Sugo is again Kotono Mitsuishi, and Shūichi Ikeda and Yuri Amano return as Kyoshiro Nagumo and Kyōko Aoi. Sunrise is credited for planning and production, with Bandai Namco Filmworks producing and distributing.
The release anchors a 35th-anniversary push that also includes a VR virtual museum, café collaborations, staff events and Future GPX Cyber Formula Spiral, a new racing game from Project YNP whose original scenario Fukuda is supervising. Sunrise's racing series first aired in 1991 and continued through the 11, ZERO, SAGA and SIN OVAs.
