Suikoden: The Anime brings one of the most loved role-playing video games of the 1990s to television. It adapts Konami's game Suikoden II, first released in 1998. The show is the first TV anime made by KONAMI animation, working together with NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan. It premieres in Japan on October 3, 2026, with a special 60-minute first episode. It is planned to run for two seasons in a row, through March 2027, on Tokyo MX, Kansai TV, BS Asahi, and many other stations. The story takes place in the Dunan region. Two powers there are in a long and bitter conflict: the Highland Kingdom, a strong military nation, and the City-States of Jowston, a group of allied cities. Magic in this world comes from runes. Runes are special marks of power that people carry, and the greatest of them, the 27 True Runes, are said to shape the whole world. The main characters are two close friends. Riliu (called Riou in some versions) is the hero. Jowy Atreides is his best friend since childhood. Both boys are young soldiers in the Unicorn Brigade, a youth unit of Highland's army. Riliu also has an adopted older sister, Nanami. She is cheerful and protective, and she wants the three of them to stay together and live in peace. In the early part of the story, an attack on their unit splits the boys apart and pulls them into a much bigger war. As the fighting spreads, Riliu and Jowy each gain a share of a mighty power. They want strength so they can protect the people they care about. But strength in war always has a cost. The friends may choose different paths, and the question of what is right does not have an easy answer. The show's opening song, by the band amazarashi, speaks to this idea of young people forced to grow up too fast because of war. Fans of the game will know the idea of the 108 Stars of Destiny. In Suikoden II, the player gathers more than a hundred allies, each with their own skills and stories, to build an army and a home base. This idea comes from the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, which also has 108 heroes. The game is famous for its big cast, its emotional story, and its painful themes of friendship, loyalty, and loss. The anime is directed by Yuzo Sato, and Michihiro Tsuchiya writes the scripts. Ryo Yamauchi is the anime character designer. His work builds on drafts by Arata Suzuki and on the original game art by Fumi Ishikawa. Koji Nakamura composes the music. Toshiki Kumagai voices Riliu, Shinba Tsuchiya voices Jowy, and Ayumi Hinohara voices Nanami. The show will also stream on many platforms in Japan, as well as on Ani-One Asia and ADN.
