Fool Night is a dark science-fiction drama that will stream on Netflix worldwide from November 26, 2026, with Japanese audio and an English dub. It is a special team-up: studios Sunrise, known for Gundam, and Shaft, known for Monogatari, are making it together for the first time. Atsushi Yukawa directs, Jin Tanaka writes the series structure, and Tatsuya Kato composes the music. The anime is based on a manga by Kasumi Yasuda. It has run in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine since November 2020 and had 13 volumes by June 2026. Viz Media publishes it in English. The manga was nominated for the 2022 Next Manga Award and was ranked in the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guide, a popular yearly list of the best manga. The world of Fool Night is dying slowly. For about 100 years, a thick blanket of clouds has covered the whole Earth, and no sunlight reaches the ground. Without the sun, plants cannot grow well, and there is less and less oxygen to breathe. To survive, humans invented a strange and troubling process called "transfloration." A seed is planted inside a person, and over time their body turns into a giant plant, called a Spiriflor, that makes oxygen for others. People who agree to do it receive money. For many poor people, it looks like the only way out. The main character is Toshiro Kamiya, a young man with almost nothing. His mother is sick, and his low-paying job cannot even cover her medicine, let alone food. Out of options, he decides to sign up for transfloration and give his body for the payment. But the process does something unexpected to him. Toshiro gains the power to hear and understand the voices of the plants, the people who were once human. He starts using this ability to help families find loved ones who were transformed. His childhood friend Yomiko, who works at the transfloration medical center, is also part of his story. The series asks hard questions. Is it right for a society to survive by asking its poorest people to give up their bodies? What is left of a person once they become a plant? It mixes mystery, as Toshiro follows the plants' voices, with painful looks at class, money, and sacrifice. Fool Night is serious and often disturbing, with themes of body horror, suicide, and death. It is meant for adult viewers who enjoy thoughtful, moody science fiction.
