Tokiyuki Houjou

The Elusive Samurai Season 2 continues a historical action anime based on real events in 14th-century Japan. The manga is by Yusei Matsui, the creator of Assassination Classroom. It ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from January 2021 to February 2026 and fills 26 volumes. It won the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2024 and has more than 6 million copies in circulation. CloverWorks animates the show, and Yuta Yamazaki directs. The first part, 12 episodes, aired in summer 2024. This new run of 12 episodes began in July 2026 on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block and ends in October 2026. The story is set at the end of the Kamakura period. For about 150 years, Japan's warrior government, called the shogunate, was based in Kamakura and run by the powerful Hojo family. In 1333, a trusted general named Ashikaga Takauji turned against them. The Kamakura government fell in a few days, and most of the Hojo clan died. The hero is Hojo Tokiyuki, a real person from history. When his world collapsed, he was just a boy, the young heir of the ruling family. Tokiyuki was never good at fighting or studying. But he had one amazing talent: he is incredibly good at running away and hiding. He can dodge arrows, slip past guards, and escape from almost any trap. In a time when samurai were expected to fight bravely and die with honor, Tokiyuki's strength is the opposite. He survives. He is rescued by Suwa Yorishige, the head priest of a shrine in the Suwa region in the mountains of Shinano. Yorishige is cheerful and strange, and he seems to be able to see the future. He believes Tokiyuki can become a hero who will one day defeat Takauji. Tokiyuki is joined by a group of loyal young followers with their own skills. They include Kojiro, Ayako, and Shizuku, and later Genba and Fubuki. Together, they hide, train, and look for chances to fight back against Takauji's growing power. In the new episodes, Tokiyuki keeps growing from a frightened boy into a young leader. His band faces stronger enemies, deals with tricky local lords, and tries to win allies. The goal stays the same: to fight Takauji and bring back what his family lost, using escape and cleverness instead of brute force. The show has a very unusual style. It mixes bloody sword fights and real history with wild, silly comedy and bright, creative animation. Takauji himself is shown as a strange and almost supernatural figure. The narration often talks to the audience directly, explaining history in a fun way. The main themes are survival, loyalty, and the idea that running away can be its own kind of courage. It is best watched after the first season.
