Fans waited more than nine years for this one. The second TV season of Saga of Tanya the Evil premiered on July 8, 2026, and ran for 12 episodes through late September. It aired on several Japanese channels and streamed worldwide on Crunchyroll. Studio NUT, which made the first season in 2017 and the movie in 2019, returned to animate it. The new director is Takayuki Yamamoto. Kenta Ihara again wrote the series scripts, and Aoi Yuki once more voices Tanya. This season picks up right where the 2019 film ended. Watch season 1 and the movie first. The series is based on light novels by Carlo Zen. Here is the basic idea. A cold, logical Japanese office worker is killed by an angry man he fired. Before he can move on, he meets a god-like being that he mockingly calls Being X. The man refuses to believe in any god. So, as a kind of test or punishment, Being X sends him to be reborn as a little orphan girl, Tanya Degurechaff. She lives in a world very much like Europe before the First World War, but here, magic is part of modern warfare. Aerial mages fly into battle and fire magic from their guns. Tanya is small and looks sweet, but her mind is that of a ruthless, career-focused adult. She joins the army of the Empire, a country that looks a lot like old Imperial Germany. Her plan is simple: rise fast, get a safe desk job far from the fighting, and live comfortably. But things never go her way. Her cold choices look like fearless loyalty to her bosses. She keeps winning medals and getting sent to the most dangerous places. To use her strongest magic, she must even say prayers to the very god she hates. In season 2, the war has grown much wider. It is now autumn in the year 1926 of the story's calendar. Lieutenant Colonel Tanya leads Kampfgruppe Salamander, a German word for a mixed battle group. It is a fast strike force built from her feared 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion. Her unit is moved away from the western Rhine front to a new war in the east, against a huge nation called the Federation. There, she faces harsh cold, a vast land, and new enemies. One of them is Mikhel, a Federation aerial mage voiced by Tomokazu Sugita. The show is a dark war story with a lot of black comedy, meaning jokes about grim things. Much of the fun comes from watching Tanya's calm, selfish thoughts clash with how others see her. It also looks seriously at war, politics, and faith. Critics often note that it stands out from other isekai (stories about being sent to another world) because its hero is not a good person at all. The novels have sold more than 6.5 million copies.
