Siegfried Kircheis met Reinhard von Müsel, later known as Reinhard von Lohengramm, when they were both children living in the same middle-class neighborhood. The two boys became inseparable, and Kircheis would stay by Reinhard's side for the rest of his life, joining the Imperial military alongside him so they could rise through the ranks together.
People sometimes called Kircheis Reinhard's shadow, and a few even dismissed him as little more than Reinhard's personal attendant, but Kircheis proved again and again that he was a skilled commander in his own right. He earned his own admiral's rank in 796 of the Universal Century, distinguishing himself during the Castrop Rebellion and in repelling an invasion attempt by the Free Planets Alliance.
Reinhard trusted Kircheis completely and often treated him as though he were part of himself, relying on his calm judgment to balance out his own fierce ambition. Kircheis followed Reinhard from one assignment to the next for years, a quiet, steady presence behind the young admiral's rapid rise to power. Their bond, built since childhood, remains one of the deepest friendships in the entire story, and it shapes Reinhard's path long after Kircheis's time in the military ends.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a huge space story that many fans call one of the greatest science fiction anime ever made. It is based on a set of ten novels by Japanese writer Yoshiki Tanaka, published from 1982 to 1987. The books won the Seiun Award, a major Japanese prize for science fiction. The anime was not made for TV at first. It came out as an OVA, which means it was sold directly on home video. Its 110 episodes were released in four parts between 1988 and 1997, with Noboru Ishiguro as the main director. Much of the background music comes from classical pieces, which gives the show a grand and serious feeling. The story takes place far in the future, when people have spread across the stars. Two great powers have been fighting each other for about 150 years. One is the Galactic Empire, ruled by an emperor and a class of noble families. The other is the Free Planets Alliance, a republic where people vote for their leaders. Between them sits Fezzan, a rich trading planet. It is officially part of the Empire, but it does business with both sides and quietly plays them against each other. Huge fleets of warships meet in battle, and a giant space fortress called Iserlohn guards the path between the two nations. The heart of the show is two young commanders on opposite sides. Reinhard von Lohengramm is a brilliant and proud officer of the Empire. He was born into a poor noble family, and his beloved older sister was taken away to serve the emperor. Reinhard wants to win her back, and he dreams of bringing down the old ruling family and changing the whole galaxy. His closest friend since childhood, Siegfried Kircheis, stands loyally at his side. On the Alliance side is Yang Wen-li. He never wanted to be a soldier. He joined the military academy because it was free, and he really wanted to study history. Yet Yang turns out to be a genius at strategy, and he often wins battles that look impossible. The two men become rivals who deeply respect each other. The cast is very large. There are dozens of admirals, politicians, soldiers, and spies, and each one has a clear personality. Fans often name characters like Oskar von Reuenthal, a cool and sharp Imperial admiral, Walter von Schönkopf, a tough fighter who leads a famous unit of ground troops, and Dusty Attenborough, a young and cheerful officer who serves with Yang. A narrator speaks often, like a history teacher, so the show feels like a record of real events. What makes this anime special is that it does not split the world into simple good guys and bad guys. The Empire is unfair in many ways, but it can be ruled well by a wise leader. The Alliance believes in freedom, but its government can be lazy and corrupt. The show asks hard questions about which kind of government is better, and why people go to war. Quiet talks about politics, money, and power are just as exciting as the space battles. War is shown as costly and sad, and many lives are lost. The pace is slow and thoughtful, and the show asks for patience. In return, it gives a rich and moving story that many viewers never forget. Critics have praised it for decades, and it remains a must-watch for anyone who loves big, serious science fiction.
