Shizuku Tsukishima is a book-loving junior high student living in a quiet Tokyo suburb. She spends one summer trying to read twenty books before the new school term starts, more interested in stories than almost anything else. While looking for a library book, she notices that someone named Amasawa Seiji has checked out nearly every title she enjoys, and starts to feel curious about this stranger who seems to share her exact taste.
That curiosity turns sour at first. The boy behind the name turns out to be a classmate who once mocked a song she translated for her graduation ceremony, calling her lyrics corny. She angrily calls him a jerk without even realizing who he is. Once the mix-up gets sorted out, the two begin spending real time together, and what starts as annoyance slowly grows into friendship and then love.
Through Seiji Amasawa, Shizuku meets his grandfather and a mysterious cat statue called the Baron, who becomes the inspiration for a story she starts writing herself. Watching Seiji commit fully to his dream of becoming a violin maker makes Shizuku question what she truly wants to do with her own life, and she decides to try writing seriously instead of just reading. By the end of the film, she has grown more confident, and agrees to marry Seiji when they are both grown up.
On screen

Whisper of the Heart is a 1995 film from Studio Ghibli, the Japanese studio behind many famous animated movies. It was directed by Yoshifumi Kondō, a longtime Ghibli animator, and it is the only feature film he directed. Hayao Miyazaki wrote the screenplay. The movie is based on a 1989 manga, a Japanese comic, by Aoi Hiiragi. It opened in Japan on July 15, 1995. Its Japanese title is Mimi wo Sumaseba, which means something like "if you listen closely." The film takes place in Tama New Town, a large group of hills and apartment buildings on the western edge of Tokyo. It shows a normal 1990s Japanese neighborhood in loving detail: crowded small apartments, steep streets, trains, convenience stores, and a quiet public library. There are no monsters or wars here. The magic in this story is mostly the magic of everyday life. The main character is Shizuku Tsukishima, a junior high school student who loves books. She reads so much that she notices something strange. Many of the library books she borrows were checked out before her by the same person, a boy named Seiji Amasawa. She starts to wonder who he is. Her life also includes her best friend Yūko, who is worried about her own crush, and a busy family that lives in a tiny apartment. Shizuku is also writing new Japanese words for the American song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver, and that song comes back many times in the film. One day Shizuku follows a big, calm cat she sees in town. He leads her to a small antique shop on a hill. The shop belongs to Shirō Nishi, a kind old man with many stories. Inside she finds the Baron, an elegant cat statue in a suit with bright eyes, which seems to hold a secret story of its own. She also meets Seiji, who turns out to be connected to the shop. Seiji already knows what he wants to do with his life: he hopes to become a skilled maker of violins, and he dreams of studying in Italy. Seiji's clear goal makes Shizuku feel unsure about herself. She does not yet know what her own talent is. So she gives herself a hard challenge: she tries to write a real story, with the Baron at its center. The film follows her long nights of work, her doubts, and the pressure of school exams. This is the heart of the movie. It is a coming-of-age story, which means a story about growing up, finding out who you are, and learning that real skill takes time and effort. The film has gentle romance and a few dreamy fantasy scenes, but it is mostly calm, warm, and honest about how young people feel. Critics praised it as a beautiful story about the hopes of teenagers, and it earned about 3.15 billion yen in Japan. The Baron and the cat Moon later returned in Ghibli's 2002 film The Cat Returns, and a live-action film sequel came out in 2022.
