Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a fantasy action series from the studio Bones. It was directed by Yasuhiro Irie, with scripts by Hiroshi Onogi and music by Akira Senju. It ran for 64 episodes from April 2009 to July 2010. It is based on the manga (Japanese comic) by Hiromu Arakawa. An earlier anime from 2003 used the same manga but changed the story halfway through. Brotherhood is different. It follows the whole manga from start to finish, so it tells the story the way the author planned. The story is set in Amestris, a country run by its army. It looks a bit like Europe in the early 1900s, with trains, old cities, and soldiers. In this world, alchemy is real. Alchemy here is a kind of science-magic. A skilled person can take something apart and build it into something new, like turning stone into a wall. But there is one firm rule. You must give up something of the same value to get anything back. The most serious crime is trying to create or bring back a human. The heroes are two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric. As young boys, they missed their late mother so much that they tried to bring her back with alchemy. It went horribly wrong. Edward lost an arm and a leg, and now uses metal limbs called automail. Alphonse lost his entire body. Only his soul remains, tied to a large, empty suit of armor. Edward joins the army as a State Alchemist and earns the nickname Fullmetal Alchemist. The brothers travel the country looking for the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary object they hope can give them back what they lost. The brothers do not travel alone for long. Colonel Roy Mustang is an ambitious officer who controls fire. Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye is his loyal and skilled sharpshooter. Winry Rockbell is the brothers' childhood friend, who builds and fixes Edward's automail. As the brothers dig deeper, they find a secret plot that reaches the very top of the government. They also face strange enemies who seem to be more than human, and they learn about dark parts of their country's past. The show handles many themes. It looks at war and guilt, the cost of power, and what it means to be human. It also asks whether science should have limits. Even with these heavy ideas, it keeps a lot of humor and heart. The loving, teasing bond between the two brothers keeps the story warm. Brotherhood received very strong praise. Many critics and fans call it one of the greatest anime series of all time. Reviewers praised its carefully built world, its well-planned plot, and its thoughtful message. It is often suggested as a great first anime for new viewers.
