Sadaharu is the enormous white dog that travels with the Yorozuya, the odd-jobs group at the center of Gintama. He is technically an inugami, a kind of dog spirit, though in the story he mostly acts like an oversized, overly strong pet who happens to be far bigger and far more dangerous than he looks.
Sadaharu was abandoned and later taken in by Kagura, who has actually owned a whole line of pets, all given the same name; the current dog is simply the newest one to carry it. Before Kagura found him, he belonged to a pair of shrine maiden sisters who could no longer afford to keep him. When Sadaharu first joins the group, he is wild and will bite almost anything smaller than himself without warning, including the heads of Gintoki Sakata and the other Yorozuya members. Over time, living with Kagura and the rest of the group calms him down, and he becomes much more cooperative, even letting Gintoki and Kagura ride on his back.
Kagura is really the only person strong enough to fully control him, which says a great deal about her own monstrous strength as a member of an alien race. Sadaharu also has a soft side: after saving a small dachshund's owner from drowning, he is finally given permission to date the dog he has fallen for.

Gintama is a comedy that loves to break the rules. It comes from a manga by Hideaki Sorachi that ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2018, and later finished in 2019. The studio Sunrise made the TV anime. This first series began on TV Tokyo in 2006 and ran until 2010, with 201 episodes. Later seasons pushed the full TV run to 367 episodes. The manga has sold more than 73 million copies, and critics often praise its one-of-a-kind humor. The story takes place in a strange version of Japan's Edo period, the time of samurai and swords, roughly a few hundred years ago. In this world, aliens called the Amanto came to Earth and took control. The old government still exists, but it only does what the aliens want. The aliens brought spaceships, new machines, and other modern things to old Edo. They also banned people from carrying swords in public. For the samurai, whose whole way of life was the sword, this was a hard blow. Gintoki Sakata is one of those old samurai. He fought in the war against the aliens long ago, but now he is a lazy, messy man who just tries to pay his rent. He still carries a wooden sword. He runs a small business called Yorozuya, which means "odd jobs." The idea is simple: for money, they will do almost any task someone asks. In practice, the jobs are usually weird, and they often go wrong in loud and silly ways. Gintoki works with two young helpers. Shinpachi Shimura is a polite boy who wants to learn what it means to be a true samurai, and he is often the only sensible person in the room. Kagura is a girl from an alien clan who looks small but is shockingly strong and eats huge amounts of food. They live with Sadaharu, a giant dog. Together, they feel like an odd little family. The group often runs into the Shinsengumi, a police force in Edo with its own colorful members. Most episodes are stand-alone stories filled with jokes. The show makes fun of other anime and manga, especially the action stories in its own magazine. It often breaks the fourth wall, which means the characters talk about being in a TV show or speak to the audience. The jokes can be very silly, very fast, or very strange. But Gintama is not only a comedy. From time to time, the show switches into longer, serious stories with sword fights, sad pasts, and real danger. These arcs show that under his lazy face, Gintoki cares deeply about the people around him. The sudden change from big laughs to strong feelings is what many fans love most. Because the series is very long and mostly episodic, it is easy to start with and enjoy one story at a time.
