Rakurou Hizutome

Shangri-La Frontier is an action comedy about a gamer who is great at bad games. Its third anime season is set to begin in January 2027 (AniList lists January 10) and is planned to run for two back-to-back parts. Studio C2C makes the anime. The first season aired from October 2023 to March 2024, and the second from October 2024 to March 2025. The story started as a web novel by Katarina in 2017. The manga version, drawn by Ryosuke Fuji, has run in Weekly Shonen Magazine since 2020. It has sold more than 16 million copies and won the 2023 Kodansha Manga Award in the shonen category. The hero is Rakuro Hizutome, a high school boy with a very strange hobby. He loves "trash games": video games that are buggy, unfair, or badly made. He plays them until he beats them anyway. After finishing yet another terrible game, he decides to try something different. He starts playing Shangri-La Frontier, a hugely popular "full-dive" virtual reality game. In full-dive VR, the player's mind enters the game, so it feels like being inside a real world. His character is named Sunraku, and he usually runs around with a bird mask on his head and very little armor. Rakuro soon finds that his years of fighting unfair games have made him an unusual player. He is very good at reading enemy patterns, dodging, and trying crazy ideas. Early on, he runs into one of the game's Unique Monsters, rare and powerful bosses that almost no one has seen. This sets him on a path to uncover the game's deepest secrets. Along the way he meets a colorful cast. Arthur Pencilgon is a clever and sneaky player who used to hunt other players. Oikatzo is a professional fighting-game player. Emul is a small rabbit-folk character inside the game who becomes his cheerful partner. At school, there is Psyger-0, a top player in the game who is also his classmate in real life. The show often cuts between tense boss fights and funny chats between gamers. The series stands out because it is about the joy of gaming itself: learning a boss, failing, and trying again until you win. The fights are bright and fast, and C2C's animation of the big monsters is a highlight. Season 3 continues the story after season 2, so fans should watch the earlier seasons first.
