The Ramparts of Ice is a gentle school drama about friendship, first love, and the walls people build around their hearts. Its first anime season aired on TBS in Japan from April 2 to July 2, 2026, and it streams worldwide on Netflix. Studio Kai makes the anime, with director Mankyu. The second season was announced after episode 14 of the first, and it begins on October 1, 2026. The story comes from a manga by Kocha Agasawa. It started as a self-published webtoon, a comic made to scroll on a phone, on the Line Manga Indies service. It later became an official Line Manga series from 2020 to 2022. Shueisha printed it in 14 volumes. The manga won the 2024 Vertical Manga Award and was very high on fan wish lists for an anime before this adaptation. The main character is Koyuki Hikawa, a high school girl who keeps other people far away. She is quiet, sharp-tongued, and cold toward almost everyone, so classmates see her as an "ice queen." Deep down, she has been hurt before and fears getting close to people. Then she meets Minato Amamiya, a boy from another class who has no sense of personal space. He talks to her like they are old friends and does not seem to notice her cold looks. Little by little, his easy honesty starts to melt her defenses. Two more friends complete the group. Miki is Koyuki's childhood best friend. She was once the most popular girl in school, a kind of class idol, but she hides her true self behind a bright public face. Yota is a kind, gentle boy who plays basketball and has liked Miki for a long time. In season 2, the four are closer than ever, but their feelings are also more tangled. Koyuki and Minato start to feel something that is more than friendship. At the same time, Yota finally tells Miki how he really feels about her. Some of the friends say what is in their hearts, while others hide it, and so their paths keep crossing and missing each other. The series stands out for its realistic, warm view of teenage life. It does not use big plot twists. Instead, it looks closely at social worry, loneliness, and the courage it takes to be yourself. It is a good choice for fans of slow, feelings-focused romance like Horimiya or Kimi ni Todoke. Watch the first season first.
